Erin Gruwell Bio, Life, and Career:
Erin Gruwell is a well-known educator in the United States. She was born on August 15, 1969, and is best known for the unconventional approach to education that she uses in her classroom, which led to the publication of the book The Freedom Writers Diary: How a Teacher and 150 Teens Used Writing to Change Themselves and the World Around Them (1999). Her life was the subject of the documentary film Freedom Writers: Stories from the Heart, which aired on PBS in 2019, and the film Freedom Writers, which debuted in 2007.
Erin Gruwell is the daughter of Stephen Douglass Gruwell, a former baseball scout for the Anaheim Angels, and Sandra Faye Alley. She was born in Glendora, which is located in the state of California. When she was still a small child, her parents went through a divorce. She got the Lauds and Laurels Distinguished Alumni Award after graduating from both Bonita High School in La Verne, California, and the University of California, Irvine. Both schools are located in the state of California. She attended California State University, Long Beach, where she received both her master’s degree and her teaching certifications. The School of Education there later recognized her as a Distinguished Alumna of the program.
Erin’s first career choice was supposed to be that of a lawyer, but she changed her mind and decided to become a teacher instead. She made the decision to become a teacher after watching TV coverage of the riots that occurred in Los Angeles in 1992. She came to the conclusion that teaching children might make a greater impact on society than any other career. She explained her line of thinking by saying, “I thought, God, by the time you’re defending a kid in the courtroom, the war is already gone.” My opinion is that this, the classroom, is where the real struggle ought to take place.
The year 1994 marked Gruwell’s first year as a student teacher at Woodrow Wilson High School in Long Beach, California. She was responsible for the school’s underachievers as her assignment. A student at Wilson High School, a young man by the name of Sharad, had only just transferred from a competing high school, where it was believed that he had threatened his instructor with a gun. On the other hand, a few months into the school year, one of her other pupils handed around a note picturing Sharaud (an African American) with huge lips. Gruwell explained to her class that it was drawings like that one that inspired people to create the Holocaust.
When one of her students asked her what the Holocaust was, she was met with confused looks from the rest of her class; none of her students were familiar with one of the most significant events that occurred in the 20th century. Ms. Gruwell took the children to watch the movie “Schindler’s List,” spent her own money to buy the students new literature, and invited outside speakers into the classroom. After completing a year of student teaching, Gruwell became a full-time teacher at Wilson and was assigned to work with a group of sophomore students.
Her autumn semester got off to a bumpy start because of student demonstrations over Proposition 187, but eventually, things got back on track. But Gruwell did not give up and was able to connect with her pupils by challenging them to keep diaries and create films about their life and by drawing parallels between the family quarrel in Romeo and Juliet and a gang battle. In addition to this, she had the pupils read books such as The Diary of a Young Girl, Zlata’s Diary, and Night, which were written by and about other youngsters who lived through wartime.
