Floyd Mayweather Biography

Floyd Mayweather, Jr., also known as Money Mayweather or Pretty Boy, is a former professional boxer from Grand Rapids, Michigan, United States. He is considered one of the best fighters of all time based on pound-for-pound performance. Mayweather’s unmarked face earned him the moniker “Pretty Boy” during his amateur career. His amateur career came to an end at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta when he lost a controversial decision to Bulgaria’s Serafim Todorov in the semifinals.

He was left with only a bronze medal in the featherweight division as a result. On October 11, 1996, he turned professional and knocked out American Roberto Apodaca in the second round. While he was engaged in a bitter rivalry with his father Floyd Mayweather Sr. over the WBC junior lightweight and super lightweight titles, his uncle Roger Mayweather, a former junior welterweight and super featherweight champion.

Mayweather thrived and won the WBC junior lightweight title on October 3, 1998, by stopping veteran American titleholder Genaro Hernandez in the eighth round. In 1998, Mayweather was named Fighter of the Year by Ring magazine. Ring magazine and the WBC lightweight titles were won by Mayweather in 2001, the WBC super lightweight title was won by Mayweather four years later in 2005, and the Ring magazine and WBC welterweight titles were won by Mayweather four years later in 2006.

Having remained unbeaten in all 38 of his professional fights as of early 2007, he was already widely regarded as the world’s best pound-for-pound boxer (24 by knockout). Even so, Mayweather didn’t become well-known until he beat fellow American Oscar De La Hoya to win the WBC super welterweight title (junior middleweight). The four-part HBO documentary series 24/7, which aired during the buildup to the fight and helped raise Mayweather’s profile more than the fight itself.

He developed into a compelling character with an ego as big as his talent and a tendency to be both annoying and charming at the same time. In terms of pay-per-view and live gate sales, Mayweather vs. De La Hoya was a huge financial success. In December 2007, he returned to the ring and defeated Britain’s previously undefeated Ricky Hatton in Las Vegas by knockout in the tenth round. The fight drew a large crowd and earned Mayweather the Ring magazine Fighter of the Year award for that year, along with his victory over De La Hoya.

Floyd Mayweather Career

Mayweather announced his retirement from boxing in June of that year, just months before his scheduled rematch with De La Hoya. The “retirement” was expected to last only a few months, but Mayweather fought again in September 2009 against Juan Manuel Márquez, a natural lightweight and fan favorite who moved up two divisions to accept the fight. It was Mayweather’s first fight since his loss to Ricky Hatton.

In spite of Márquez’s bravery, Mayweather was declared the victor by a unanimous decision after 12 rounds. Mayweather’s next fight is against Filipino sensation Manny Pacquiao, who Mayweather’s father has accused of using performance-enhancing drugs, leading to a prolonged dispute over the nature of the blood testing that would precede the fight. The buildup to the fight was filled with excitement and more than a little gamesmanship.

Mayweather defeated three-time welterweight champion, Shane Mosley, in a non-title fight in May 2010 when the Pacquiao fight was on hold. To reclaim the WBC welterweight title he had surrendered during his career, Mayweather fought Victor Ortiz in September of 2011 and controversially (though legally) stopped Ortiz after Ortiz apologized for a previous head butt and approached Mayweather with his guard down.

After pleading guilty to reduced domestic violence battery and harassment charges stemming from a September 2010 incident in which Mayweather assaulted his former girlfriend in front of their two children, Mayweather was sentenced to 90 days in jail and 100 hours of community service in December 2011. After defeating Miguel Cotto in May 2012, he was crowned WBA light middleweight champion.

However, he was sentenced to time served. Mayweather was sentenced to two months in prison in June 2012 and served that time without incident. In May 2013, Mayweather defeated Robert Guerrero by unanimous decision. Both of Mayweather’s subsequent fights showed possible weaknesses in his armor: in September 2013, he defeated Mexico’s Saul Alvarez by majority decision, and in May 2014, he defeated Argentina’s Marcos Maidana by majority decision.

These were Mayweather’s second and third losses in his career where he did not defeat his opponent by knockout, unanimous decision, or retirement. On May 2, 2015, Mayweather and Pacquiao finally agreed to a fight after years of speculation and back-and-forth negotiations. In this fight, Mayweather had a distinct advantage due to his pre-fight hype. He controlled the pace throughout the fight and emerged victorious by a unanimous decision.

Mayweather faced off against UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor on August 26th, 2017. Despite the huge financial rewards for both fighters (Mayweather was guaranteed at least $100 million for his participation), the fight was widely panned as a publicity stunt by boxing observers, who were proven correct when Mayweather easily defeated a fighter who had never participated in a pure boxing match before with a technical knockout in the 10th round. The fight ended Mayweather’s boxing career with a perfect 50-0 record.
