Geraldo Rivera Bio, Life, and Career:

Geraldo Rivera, whose birth name was Gerald Riviera and who was born on July 4, 1943, is a well-known political analyst, author, attorney, and journalist from the United States who worked on the Fox News Channel from 2001 till 2023. Between the years 1987 and 1998, he was the host of the tabloid talk program Geraldo. He became known to the public after appearing in the live TV show “The Mystery of Al Capone’s Vaults” in 1986.

Geraldo at Large was the name of the news magazine program that Rivera aired. When he is not hosting At Large, Rivera hosts the occasional broadcast of Geraldo Rivera Reports. Between the years 2022 and 2023, he participated as a rotating co-host on “The Five.” Rivera was born in New York City, New York, at the Beth Israel Medical Center. His parents, Lillian (née Friedman; October 16, 1924 – June 3, 2018) and Cruz “Allen” Rivera (October 1, 1915 – November 1987), were, respectively, employed in the hospitality industry as a waitress and cab driver.

Rivera was the son of Lillian and Cruz “Allen” Rivera. His father, who was originally from Puerto Rico, is where he gets his Galego Spanish lineage from. His mother was an Ashkenazi, which is a branch of the Jewish religion, while his father was a Christian, namely of the Roman Catholic faith. Rivera had a bar mitzvah and had a “mostly Jewish” upbringing when he was growing up.

He spent his childhood in Brooklyn as well as in West Babylon, New York, where he received his secondary education at West Babylon High School. Although Riviera, Ribeira, Rivera, and Ribera are all variations of the same family name as spelled by Galician, Italian, and Portuguese ancestors, Rivera’s mother began spelling their surname as “Riviera” to avoid having bigotry aimed at them. Rivera’s family was sometimes subjected to prejudice and racism, and his mother began spelling their surname “Riviera” to prevent having bigotry directed at them.

The huge number of people who settled in Puerto Rico in the 1500s who came from Galicia in Spain gave rise to the widespread use of the Rivera family name. In addition, the surname Rivera was quite widespread among Jews of the Sephardic religion. Additionally, he has a connection to the Lebovitz family in Brooklyn, New York.

Between the years of 1961 and 1963, he was a student at the State University of New York Maritime College located in the Throggs Neck neighborhood of the Bronx. While there, he competed on the school’s rowing squad. After that, he made the switch to the University of Arizona, where he eventually earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration in the year 1965.

After working a variety of occupations that included being a garment salesman and a short-order chef, Rivera eventually enrolled in Brooklyn Law School in 1966. Prior to graduating near the top of his class in 1969 with a J.D., he worked as an intern for the New York County District Attorney under the leadership of crime fighter Frank Hogan and for Harlem Assertion of Rights, which is a community-based provider of legal services. Both of these positions were held while he was a law student.

After that, during the summer of 1969, he participated in the Reginald Heber Smith Fellowship in Poverty Law at the University of Pennsylvania Law School. Later that year, he was accepted into the New York State Bar Association. Rivera began working as a reporter for WABC-TV’s Eyewitness News in the year 1970 after being hired by the station.

His report on the neglect and abuse of patients with intellectual disabilities at Staten Island’s Willowbrook State School and Rockland County’s Letchworth Village won him a Peabody Award in 1972, and he began to appear on ABC national programs such as 20/20 and Nightline upon their launches in 1978 and 1979 respectively. In 1972, he received national attention for his report, and he won the award.

After John Lennon watched Rivera’s report on the patients at Willowbrook, he and Rivera put on a benefit performance called “One to One” on August 30, 1972, at Madison Square Garden in New York City (which Yoko Ono released posthumously in 1986 as Live in the City). The concert was named after Rivera’s documentary about the patients at Willowbrook.

In July of 1973, Geraldo Rivera hosted and executive produced the late-night news magazine Good Night America, for which he also taped the pilot episode and served as host. It was initially broadcast on a semi-regular basis beginning in April 1974 and continuing until June 1977 as a part of the Wide World of Entertainment programming block on ABC. The show’s theme song, Ringo Starr’s “It Don’t Come Easy” was played throughout.

The television show Good Night America discussed contentious issues of the time period, such as the use of marijuana and the legal standing of people who avoided serving in the Vietnam War conscription. The groundbreaking Zapruder film was initially shown on national television for the first time in an episode of the program that aired in 1975 and featured Dick Gregory and Robert J. Groden. On Rivera’s website, any of the show’s 33 episodes can be watched online or downloaded to your computer.

Rivera made history on May 19, 1983, when he aired the first mention of “AIDS” on any network in the United States by its full name. (Other names had been used for the disease in the previous two years due to a lack of understanding regarding the condition at the time.) On the show 20/20, he spoke with Ken Ramsauer, a lighting designer based in New York City. Four days later, Ramsauer passed away at the age of 27; Rivera gave a eulogy at the memorial service for Ramsauer that was held in Central Park.

In October of 1985, Roone Arledge of ABC declined to show a story that Sylvia Chase had produced for the program 20/20 on the relationship that existed between Marilyn Monroe and John and Robert F. Kennedy. As a result of Rivera’s public criticism of Arledge’s journalistic ethics, in which he claimed that Arledge’s decision to drop the subject was influenced by Arledge’s friendship with the Kennedy family (for example, Pierre Salinger, a former Kennedy adviser, working for ABC News at the time), Rivera was removed from his position at the network.

In an interview with Megyn Kelly that aired on Fox News on May 15, 2015, Geraldo Rivera indicated that the official reason given for the sacking was that he broke ABC rules when he donated $200 to a non-partisan mayoral campaign candidate. Rivera’s comments were made during the course of an interview that was broadcast.
