Giveon Bio, Life, and Career:
Giveon Dezmann Evans is an American singer who was born on February 21, 1995. He is better known by his stage name, Giveon (stylized as GIVON), which he adopted shortly after his birth. His contribution to Drake and Future’s single “Chicago Freestyle” in 2020 helped propel him to the forefront of the music scene. Both of Giveon’s extended plays, Take Time and When It’s All Said and Done, were released in the same year, with the former getting nominated for a Grammy Award in the category of Best R&B Album and the latter breaking into the top ten of the Billboard chart for Top R&B Albums in the United States.
As the second single from Take Time, he issued “Heartbreak Anniversary,” which debuted in the top 40 in the United States and was awarded Platinum certification by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Giveon and Daniel Caesar both had appearances on the single “Peaches” by Justin Bieber, which was released in 2021 and debuted at number one on the Billboard Global 200 and US Billboard Hot 100 charts respectively. Give or Take was the title of his first studio album, which was issued in 2022.
He attributes his early interest in music to his mother, who he says encouraged him to pursue it and shielded him, his brothers, and himself from the negative influences of gang culture and financial hardship. He went to Long Beach Polytechnic High School, and when he was 18 years old, he enrolled in a music education program at the Grammy Museum. It was there that he fell in love with Frank Sinatra, whose booming voice was motivational to the young man.
As he was growing up, Giveon was heavily influenced by Drake and grew up listening to R&B and soul music. Giveon participated in a Recording Academy program that taught children about the history of music. Through this program, Giveon became enamored with the music of Barry White and Frank Sinatra. Giveon was motivated to update what he heard by the jazz of the 1960s, which served as his inspiration. In August of 2018, Giveon released his debut single under his own name, titled “Garden Kisses.”
Shortly after that, a record producer from Canada by the name of Sevn Thomas noticed him on a haphazard playlist on SoundCloud and eventually signed him to his record company Not So Fast and Epic Records. After signing with the label, he immediately began playing his own songs live at a variety of various places, including “Like I Want You,” before beginning to record them professionally. Soon after the release of his single “Like I Want You” in November 2019, he was selected to serve as the opening act for Snoh Aalegra on her Ugh, A Mini Tour Again, which traveled around Europe and North America.
In 2019, Giveon went on tour with Snoh Aalegra. During the tour, Giveon would frequently freestyle because, at the time, he only had two songs available. The freestyle that Giveon performed in Chicago was emailed to Drake by his manager. Because of this, they ended up working together on the song “Chicago Freestyle,” which is where the name of the single comes from. Evans was featured in Drake’s single “Chicago Freestyle” in February 2020. At the time, the song was exclusively available on SoundCloud and YouTube. Take Time, Evans’s debut extended play was issued in March 2020. Thomas served as executive producer for this project.
Giveon earned his first charting project with the success of the EP, which topped the Heatseekers Albums chart on Billboard. Take Time was praised by modern music critics as well, who used words like “breathtaking” and “polished” to describe the album. In May 2020, Drake’s mixtape Dark Lane Demo Tapes and “Chicago Freestyle” were both made available for streaming online at the same time. The song reached its highest position on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 14, becoming Giveon’s first single to chart on the Billboard chart.
In addition to that, it was a top 40 single in Switzerland, Canada, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. Giveon made the announcement of the release of his second extended play (EP) titled When It’s All Said and Done in September 2020. Shortly after, he released the lead single titled “Stuck on You”. The extended play (EP) was made available for purchase on October 2, 2020, and it made its debut on the Billboard 200 at position number 93. Giveon’s singles “Stuck on You” and “Like I Want You” began entering a number of Billboard R&B charts in late 2020.
The latter of these singles was later certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America in December 2020. This sudden surge in popular notice led to Giveon’s records receiving a great deal of positive feedback. Giveon had his very first nomination for a Grammy Award during this time period for his album Take Time, which was entered into consideration for the award for Best R&B Album at the 2021 Grammy Awards. Additionally, he made his debut on television with a performance of “Stuck on You” on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Giveon’s singles “Heartbreak Anniversary” and “Like I Want You” both debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 list the week of February 27, 2021, with respective positions of number 74 and number 95.
These successes marked Giveon’s second and third entry on the chart. When It’s All Said and Done… Take Time is a compilation album that was released by him on March 12. It is a mixture of his first two extended plays (EPs), and it includes a new song with the title “All to Me. After only a week had passed, he was featured on the song “Peaches” by Justin Bieber, which is taken from his album Justice. Epic Records made the announcement on September 16, 2022, that Giveon had contributed to the soundtrack of the film Amsterdam with a track named “Time,” which was co-written by Drake.
