Gregg Hughes Bio, Life, and Career:

Gregg Hughes better known by his air name Opie is an American radio personality and podcast host. He is best known for his role as the former co-host of the Opie and Anthony radio show, which aired from 1995 to 2014 and featured fellow radio personality Anthony Cumia and comedian Jim Norton. Hughes’s air name Opie is a play on his real name, Gregg. Hughes and Norton remained at SiriusXM as co-hosts of “Opie with Jim Norton” from the year 2014 till the year 2016.

Hughes became the host of his own show, titled The Opie Radio Show, in October of 2016, and he remained in that role until he was fired on July 7, 2017, for photographing an employee while the person was using the restroom. On May 8, 2018, Hughes debuted his brand new show on the Westwood One network under the name The Opie Radio Podcast. The partnership with Westwood One came to an end in June of 2019, however, the podcast was not discontinued.

Hughes was up in Centerport, New York, on Long Island, and has described his mother as “very severe.” Hughes was born into an Irish-American family, and] his family is of Irish descent. His early likeness to Opie Taylor, a fictional character from The Andy Griffith Show performed by Ron Howard, led to the naming of him “Opie,” which is an abbreviation for “Opie Taylor.” Hughes graduated from Harborfields High School in Greenlawn, New York, in 1981. His yearbook notes that some of his interests include basketball, skiing, movies, and the New York Islanders hockey team.  He attended the State University of New York at Geneseo to earn a degree in communications in order to fulfill his lifelong dream of having a successful career in radio.

Following the production and distribution of an air check to a number of radio stations by Hughes, he and Cumia accepted an invitation to broadcast afternoon programming from WAAF in Boston. On March 13, 1995, the show first aired under the name Opie and Anthony.  They stayed in Boston until April 1998, when they were sacked from WAAF for an April Fool’s Day prank that involved Mayor Thomas Menino. The incident occurred on April 1st. Opie and Anthony informed their audience that the mayor had been murdered in a car accident when he was on his way to pick up a young male prostitute from Haiti.

Hughes maintained a job at the campus radio station, doing the air shifts while he was still a student. Hughes obtained a position in the promotions department at WCMF in Rochester, New York, immediately following his graduation from college. However, he quickly transitioned to working on the station’s morning show, which was then hosted by Brother Wease.

Hughes acknowledges Wease as a significant figure in the formation of his on-air character and the advancement of his career. Hughes departed WCMF to take a job at WUFX in Buffalo, New York, doing the overnight shift from midnight to 6:00 a.m. Hughes was able to further develop his style by performing more outrageous bits during his shift at the station because the station was unsupervised during that time.

Some examples of these outrageous bits include broadcasting from the roof of the station’s building and interviewing passers-by on the street. The second position that Hughes held was as the host of a rock music show called “The Nighttime Attitude,” which aired on WBAB on Long Island from 8:00 p.m. to midnight. In August of 1994, Hughes hosted a song parody contest for listeners centered on O. J. Simpson and the events surrounding the conclusion of Simpson’s murder case. One of the people that took part was from a local band called Rotgut.

Anthony Cumia, the band’s lead singer, was joined by his brother Joe, who played guitar in the band. The two of them gave a performance of “Gonna Electric Shock O. J.,” which was sung to the tune of Otis Redding’s “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay.”  The song grew popular on the show hosted by Hughes, and the two of them made their first appearance together in September 1994 to sing the song in a live setting for the first time.  Soon after that, Cumia participated in a number of other appearances, and at the beginning of 1995, he and Hughes made the decision to become a radio team.
