Griffin Newman Bio, Life, and Career:
Griffin Newman (born February 19, 1989) is a comedic actor and actor from the United States. He is known for playing the role of Arthur Everest in the television series The Tick, which is produced by Amazon Studios; for providing the voice of Orko in the animated series Masters of the Universe: Revelation, which is produced by Netflix; for cohosting the film podcast Blank Check with Griffin & David alongside film critic David Sims; and for acting as cohost and sidekick Watto on The George Lucas Talk Show.
Peter Newman, a film producer, and Antonia Dauphin, a casting director, are Newman’s parents. Newman is their son. Claude Dauphin, the man who he inherited his acting talent from, was his maternal grandfather. James Newman, his younger brother, is also an actor in his own right. Newman spent his childhood in Greenwich Village, where he also received his education at Saint Ann’s School. From a very young age, he had an interest in performing, and he would frequently put on routines starring Fozzie Bear for his friends and family.
He began performing stand-up comedy at the age of ten as a part of Jo Ann Grossman’s “Kidsncomedy” program, which was directed by Grossman. The majority of his work was political in nature and was developed in collaboration with his father. Around this time, he started getting some attention from agents, despite the fact that his parents were apprehensive about him pursuing a career in acting. His first appearance on screen was in the parody documentary The Buried Secret of M. Night Shyamalan, in which he played the role of “Teenage Fan.”
The film only used a small portion of his performance. When Newman was a teenager, he was a frequent participant at the Buck’s Rock Performing and Creative Arts Camp. In the film The Treatment from 2006, Newman makes his first significant appearance on screen playing the role of high school student Scott. After that, he went on to star in a number of different student films and short films. Around the same time, he also started doing stand-up comedy on a regular basis and produced a one-man show called Grifftopia, which he performed in 2009 and 2010.
In the teen movie “Beware the Gonzo,” which was released in 2010, Newman played the part of Horny Rob Becker, who was one of the friends of the titular Gonzo (Ezra Miller). Even though the movie was met with a variety of reactions when it was released, Newman’s performance was praised. Odie Henderson of RogerEbert.com stated that “Becker is the most interesting character in the movie.”
During the subsequent few years, Newman had recurring roles on a number of television shows, such as Blue Bloods, Big Lake, and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, in addition to making cameo appearances in sketches for Funny or Die. Just for Laughs named him one of the 2012 New Faces of Comedy: Characters after seeing him perform in the role of Russ in the television mini-series Political Animals for the USA Network. This role earned him a spot on the list. In 2013, Newman was given the role of Seymour on the NBC sitcom Mulaney, which was created by John Mulaney.
After filming the pilot episode, the network decided not to pick up the show, but later that year, Fox decided to air it; however, the role of Seymour was removed from the original script. Newman has referred to the occurrence as his very own take on the Dark Phoenix saga. In the latter half of that year, Newman began working as a correspondent for Nikki & Sara Live and making recurring appearances on The Chris Gethard Show.
Between 2013 and 2014, he was a co-host of the podcast Talking TCGS, which he did together with Riley Soloner. Beginning in January 2013, he was the host of the live comedy show The Awooga Comedy Hour alongside Andrew Tavin. Beginning in May 2014, the show became a weekly broadcast. Newman made an appearance alongside Kevin Costner in the film Draft Day in the role of Rick the Intern in 2014. Later that same year, Newman announced that he had joined a Maude Team at UCB. Draft Day was released in 2014.
After that, he went on to play supporting roles in other feature films, such as Fort Tilden, Free The Nipple, and Naomi and Ely’s No Kiss List, among others. Newman has made guest appearances in a number of web series, such as Snarky Sidekick and The Untitled Web Series That Morgan Evans Is Doing for MTV. Additionally, he starred as the Director in all three seasons of the web series Cop Show, which was created by Colin Quinn.
In March 2015, Newman collaborated with critic David Sims to launch The Phantom Podcast, a show that examines the film The Phantom Menace as if it were the only film in the Star Wars franchise. After completing its discussion of the additional Star Wars films, the program then changed its name to Blank Check with Griffin & David and began developing its new premise. During the podcast, Sims, Newman, and occasionally a guest discuss the filmographies of directors who have had massive success early on in their careers, which has allowed them to be given the freedom to make large-scale passion projects.
