Heather Heying After the demonstrations at Evergreen State College in 2017, evolutionary biologist, former professor, and author Heather E. Heying rose to national prominence and gained a lot of attention in the United States. She has been a part of the unofficial organization that is known as the intellectual dark web[3, and she testified at a forum held by the United States Department of Justice in 2018 on the topic of free speech on college campuses. Heying is also well-known for her opposition to COVID-19 vaccines and her erroneous assumption that the medication ivermectin is an effective treatment for the condition.

Both of these beliefs have been debunked. Heying taught biology at Evergreen State College in Washington State up until 2017 when he retired from that position. Her dissertation research was centered on the evolutionary ecology and sexual selection of a venomous frog native to Madagascar called the Mantella laevigata. In addition to publishing papers on the reproductive evolutionary adaptations of frogs, Heying has also published this book (2002). In July of 2017, following a year of student protests at Evergreen State College, which disrupted the campus and included one altercation between protesters and Heying’s husband and fellow professor of biology at Evergreen, Bret Weinstein, the pair brought a lawsuit against the college; the $3.85 million suit alleged the college failed to “protect its employees from repeated provocative and corrosive verbal and written hostility based on race, as well as threats of physical vs. verbal violence.”

Together with her spouse, she uploads a new episode of the Darkhorse Podcast to his YouTube page on a weekly basis. Heying was a James Madison Program Visiting Fellow at Princeton University during the 2019–2020 academic year, and his fellowship was extended through the 2020–2021 academic year. On April 29, 2020, they presented a theory on the evolutionary adaptation of consciousness that they developed with Weinstein. A Hunter-Guide Gatherer’s to the 21st Century, written by Heying and Weinstein, was released into circulation in the year 2021.

In September 2017, a settlement was struck, under the terms of which both Heying and Weinstein resigned from their positions and received a payment of $250,000. In an article that they wrote for Willamette Week, Nancy Koppelman and Leo Blakeslee said that the book did a good job of covering fundamental topics related to evolution and biology, but that it fell short when the authors claimed expertise in areas that were outside of their respective fields, such as political issues.

In a different assessment, a graduate of English Literature named Daniel James Sharp called the book “a magnificent, though also greatly flawed, achievement.” This review was published in Areo Magazine. Heying has stated that she has taken ivermectin in order to protect herself against COVID-19 and that she and Weinstein have not been vaccinated “because we have fears [about the side-effects of the COVID-19 vaccines], as we have discussed at length on this podcast.”
