Heidi W. Durrow Bio, Life, and Career:

Heidi W. Durrow is an American author who was born on June 21, 1969. She is the author of The Girl Who Fell From the Sky, which is a New York Times bestseller, and she is the recipient of the PEN/Bellwether Prize for Socially Engaged Fiction (2008). The daughter of a Danish immigrant and an African-American man who served in the Air Force, Durrow spent a portion of her childhood abroad, primarily in Turkey, Germany, and Denmark.  In 1980, her family made their home in Portland, Oregon and it is where she completed her secondary education at Jefferson High School.

She graduated with honors in 1991 from Stanford University, where she majored in English and contributed a piece to the Stanford Daily newspaper on a weekly basis. She furthered her studies by attending the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, where she eventually earned a Master of Science degree in 1992. After that, she went on to study law at Yale, where she eventually earned her J.D. in 1995. The beginning of Ms. Durrow’s professional career was spent as a business lawyer at Cravath, Swaine & Moore in New York City. There, she worked on matters involving antitrust, commercial contracts, and employment discrimination.

In 1997, she decided to pursue a career in writing and left Cravath to do so. Between the years 2000 and 2006, Durrow was employed by the National Basketball Association and the National Football League as a consultant serving in the capacity of a Life Skills trainer. Mixed Chicks Chat, which was hosted by Durrow and won multiple awards, was a weekly podcast that discussed challenges related to having a mixed race and cultural background.

In 2008, Durrow was one of the individuals who laid the groundwork for what would later become the Mixed Roots Film & Literary Festival. Stories of the Mixed experience, such as those regarding biracial identity, transracially adopted families, and interracial and intercultural partnerships and friendships, were some of the topics that were honored at the festival, which took place from 2008 to 2012. Films, readings, workshops, a gathering for families, and the largest “((Loving Day celebration))” on the West Coast were all part of the Festival’s lineup. The inaugural event for Durrow’s brand-new festival, which he dubbed the Mixed Remixed Festival, took place on June 14, 2014.
