Horatio Sanz Bio, Life and Career:
On June 4, 1969, Horatio Sanz was born in Santiago, Chile. He spent his childhood in Chicago. He also did stand-up with the Second City in Chicago and was a co-founder of the Upright Citizens Brigade.
When he made history as the first Latino cast member of the long-running sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live (1975), he joined the cast as a featured player at the start of the 24th season. He and co-featured players Jimmy Fallon and Chris Parnell were all promoted to regulars after just one season. Horatio played a variety of characters on the show, including Frankie Hilbert in “Boston Teens,” the stoner Gobi in “Jarret’s Room,” and audiovisual teacher Mr. Banglian in “Wake Up, Wakefield.”
Since 1994, Horatio has appeared in a number of films, typically in supporting roles. But it wasn’t until 2003 that he landed his first major part, with Cuba Gooding Jr. and Vivica A. Fox in the film Boat Trip (2002). From 1975 through 2007, he was a staple of Saturday Night Live. The Upright Citizens Brigade can count him as one of its first and longest-serving members. Horatio stayed in Chicago when the trio relocated to New York City, while the others produced a program for Comedy Central there.
In September of 1998, Sanz became the first Hispanic cast member on Saturday Night Live. He filled in for Tina Fey as Amy Poehler’s Weekend Update co-anchor at the start of SNL’s 31st season before Fey returned to work on October 22, 2005. Sanz’s departure from SNL was announced on September 20, 2006, as a result of major budget constraints that forced Lorne Michaels to produce fewer episodes or reduce expenses, including the reduction of long-standing, highly paid cast members like Sanz.

On February 3, 2007, Sanz returned to SNL as Elton John; on November 3, 2007, he appeared as presidential candidate Bill Richardson; and on December 17, 2011, he appeared as both himself in a musical number and a member of Beethoven’s orchestra for the Christmas episode.
After disappearing from public view for over a year, Sanz reemerged in November 2008, 100 pounds lighter (45 kg; 7 st 2 lb). Recently, I’ve been trying to improve my diet,” he said. To explain his weight loss, Sanz said, “I’ve been trying to come up with a joke about how I’ve lost weight and I was going to say, ‘I stopped putting nuts in my sundaes.'” Moreover, he claims, “I never weighed myself when I was at my fattest because I was frightened I could die.” Sanz claims that he, too, has been keeping up with his workout routine. He went on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon in June 2009 and indicated that giving up booze was a big reason why he’d lost weight.
Sanz was born in Santiago, Chile, to Sylvia and Carlos Sanz, the youngest of their three sons. The actor is Carlos Sanz’s younger sibling. In Chicago, Illinois, he spent his childhood in the North-Pulaski section of the Humboldt Park neighborhood. On July 25, 2018, in Los Angeles, he became a naturalized citizen of the United States.
He was a cast member of SNL from 1998 until 2006 and later appeared on the Comedy Central series Big Lake. He has acted in films such as Boat Trip, Step Brothers, and The Dictator, and is well-known for his impressions of R&B singer Aaron Neville and rock star Elton John.
After hiding away for over a year, Sanz finally stepped out into society again in November 2008, having shed 100 pounds. He finally came clean: “I’ve been eating better.” Sanz said, “I was trying to think of a joke about how I’ve lost weight, and I was going to say, ‘I stopped putting nuts in my sundaes.'” When asked why he never weighed himself at his heaviest, he replies, “I was frightened I could die.” Sanz claims that he, too, has been keeping up with his workout routine.
