Iyanla Vanzant Bio, Life and Career:

Rhonda Eva Harris gave birth to Vanzant on September 13, 1953, in the back of a taxi in the borough of Brooklyn, New York, in the United States. She is the daughter of Horace Harris and Sarah Jefferson, who worked as a barmaid for the railroad. In 1955, when she was only two years old, her mother passed away from breast cancer. After that, she was raised by her father’s family. After enduring physical abuse at the hands of her first husband, she eventually divorced him in 1980, taking their three children with her.

After being initiated and ordained as a priestess in the Yoruba tradition in 1983, she was given the title “Iyanla,” which translates to “great mother.” This was the culmination of her journey (as mentioned in her television interview on the Conn Jackson show). Both Medgar Evers College and Virginia Union University welcomed her during her academic career. Vanzant received his Master’s degree from the University of Santa Monica (USM), Center for the Research and Practice of Spiritual Psychology. He also received his Juris Doctor degree from the City University of New York School of Law. At the moment, she calls the town of Upper Marlboro in Maryland her home. Also, she holds a ministerial ordination in the New Thought tradition.

Ebony magazine acknowledged her as one of the “100 most influential Black Americans” in the year 2000, stating that “her books, lectures, and television appearances have made her a multimedia high priestess of healthy relationships.” This achievement earned her the title of “100 most influential Black Americans.”In the list of the 100 most spiritually important living people that Watkins’ Mind Body Spirit magazine compiled in 2012, Vanzant was ranked number seven in that category. She was one of the co-speakers on Oprah’s “Life You Want Weekend” tour in 2014, which visited eight cities and also featured Deepak Chopra, Mark Nepo, Elizabeth Gilbert, and Rob Bell. The tour was organized by Oprah. In 2016, Oprah Winfrey included Vanzant on her list of the SuperSoul100, which honors the most visionary and impactful leaders in the world.

Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority has inducted Vanzant into its ranks of honorary members. On Christmas Day in 2003, Vanzant’s daughter Gemmia, who was 30 years old, passed away as a result of an extremely uncommon form of colon cancer. In 2007, Vanzant and her husband, Yemi, finalized their divorce. Rev. Dr. Iyanla (pronounced E-Yan-La) The life of Vanzant is written like an epic journey, complete with near misses, struggle, strength, courage, and ultimate victory! She has uncovered the meaning of her existence, realized the power that resides within her, and reclaimed her genuine self as a result of the events she has had in her life. Iyanla Vanzant has established herself as a living example of the power of putting one’s faith into action and the value that can be found in the low points of one’s life. The most wonderful aspect of it is that she passes on what she has been taught to others.

Iyanla’s mother was an alcoholic, and she had an extramarital affair before she had Iyanla. Iyanla was born in the back of a taxi cab in Brooklyn, New York. Iyanla was just two years old when her mother passed away as a result of breast cancer. Iyanla and her older brother were placed in the care of their father, who in turn left his children in the care of a number of relatives, including an uncle who raped Iyanla when she was just nine years old. This left Iyanla and her older brother to be raised by their father. Iyanla had a relationship with her father, although she rarely saw or spoke to him because he was emotionally and physically absent.

By the time she was 16, she already had a child of her own. By the time she was 21, she already had three children and a husband who was physically abusive. After nine years, two attempts at suicide, and several beatings, Iyanla and her three children made their early morning escape into an uncertain future; a future in which she would be responsible for raising her three children by herself. Due to the fact that she was a single mother, she had to rely on welfare payments to support her family for a number of years. Iyanla was motivated to make a positive change in her life when she saw a billboard on a bus that encouraged her to enroll at Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn, New York.

After another three years, she received her diploma Summa Cum Laude and enrolled in the Law School of the City University of New York at Queens College. Her exceptional oratory talents attracted the attention of the Philadelphia Public Defender’s office, and they offered her a job without even conducting a formal interview with her first. Iyanla realized after three years as a practitioner that she had chosen the incorrect decision for her life, and she resigned from her employment.

Iyanla freely acknowledges, as with everyone else, that she too has gone through extended stretches of being perplexed. In contrast to most others, she takes advantage of challenging times in her life to usher herself into a new state of being. Iyanla’s decision to leave her prominent position as an attorney led to her becoming unemployed and she eventually found herself sleeping on a sofa in the basement of a friend’s house with her pregnant daughter, who was 16 at the time. She was asked to teach a workshop for women who were receiving training to make the transition from welfare to work via the kindness of a friend. Iyanla was well aware of their plight, and as a result, she took her new position very seriously.

She devised a workbook for the group to complete. This workbook was her first published work, entitled Tapping the Power Within. A Road to Self-Empowerment for Black Women, and was initially released in the year 1988. In 2008, a special edition of this book commemorating its 20th anniversary was made available. (Published by Smiley Books and Hay House). Her second book, which was titled Acts of Faith: Daily Meditations for People of Color, was so influential that it bridged the racial gap and became a favorite companion for Tipper Gore, who was married to Vice President Al Gore at the time. Iyanla’s ambitions did not include producing 13 publications and 5 books that became number one on the New York Times Best Sellers list. On the other hand, even the most carefully crafted plans frequently fall through.

Iyanla has been honored with a great deal of praise and recognition thanks to the potency and influence of her art. That was given to her. One of Halle Berry’s five “Sheros” (Glamour Magazine 2006), one of the country’s most influential African Americans (Ebony Magazine 2004), one of the country’s most 100 Influential Women (Women’s Day Magazine 2003), and one of the “most dynamic speakers in the United States” are some of the accolades that have been bestowed upon her (Emerge Magazine 2000). She embodies the characteristics of a lady of purpose, passion, and clear vision.

Dr. Vanzant goes all over the world to present her lectures and her message of hope to tens of thousands of people. Her voice can be heard often on programs such as The Tom Joyner Morning Show (Radio One), The Tavis Smiley Show (NPR), The Michael Baisden Show (ABC), and Tell Me More with Michel Martin. She is a popular choice as a guest on prime-time radio programs (NPR). She also had her own daytime talk program, Iyanla, which aired from 2001 to 2002 and was produced by Barbara Walters and Billy Getty. She played the role of a life coach in the NBC daytime drama Starting Over from 2004 to 2006. In addition, she appeared on Oprah on a regular basis from 1998 to 1999 as a member of the Change Your Life Faculty.

Iyanla shares her knowledge of Universal Principles and Law, Eastern and Western spiritual traditions and teachings, and the truth of unconditional love in her role as founder and director of the Inner Visions Institute of Spiritual Development. Her goal is to motivate others to create a better life for themselves, a better community for themselves, and a better world for themselves! At this point in her career, she devotes most of her time to the training of Life Coaches and Ministers, as well as to the facilitation of a number of community forums through Inner Visions. Iyanla: Repair My Life is a show that she hosts on OWN, which is short for the Oprah Winfrey Network. You may catch her on television right now.
