James A. Lindsay Bio, Life, and Career:

On January 25, 1901, James Lindsay Taylor, a future police officer, and explorer was born in Alexandria, Sydney to English parents George Henry Taylor, an accountant, and Harriette, née Carter. Jim attended both Bondi Public and Sydney Technical High. On March 22, 1917, he enrolled in the AIF. On March 21st, 1918, he enlisted in France’s 34th Battalion, but by the end of the month, he had been wounded by a shell fragment. Taylor, having recovered, went back to the front lines on May 11; on May 27 he was gassed while fighting near Ville.

He went back to the front a month later and stayed there until the 34th battalion was pulled out. On October 14th, Taylor reported to AIF Headquarters in London, and in March 1919 he was given permission to attend King’s College, University of London, to complete his matriculation requirements. After dying in October, he was sent to Australia in November and finally released on January 23 of that year, 1920.

In that same year, Taylor enrolled in science classes at the University of Sydney, but he dropped out in 1921 and worked odd jobs until he was drafted into the New South Wales Police Force on September 7, 1923. On September 26th, 1926, he boarded a ship bound for Rabaul, Mandated Territory of New Guinea, to enlist in the police service. For 23 years, he served as a police officer.

He began his law enforcement career at Rabaul in February 1927 and was then transferred to Salamaua as a patrol officer before being promoted to inspector of police in April 1928. In May of 1931, he was promoted to assistant district officer and moved to the Sepik. At the beginning of 1932, he was transported to Wau, and by September of the same year, he was sent to Kainantu to set up the first patrol post in the Highlands. In the Highlands, he spent the rest of his days.

Taylor teamed up with prospector Mick Leahy in March 1933, after two flights revealed the existence of populated valleys to the west of Kainantu. Taylor named the mountain they passed near on their trek westward to Kelua, where they arrived after three weeks through an area of dense inhabitants, groomed gardens, and stunning landscape. In the months leading up to August, when Taylor was called back to Kainantu, the explorers looked in every direction. No other explorers had such a relaxing stroll and discovered so much new to Europeans so quickly.

Taylor went on leave and immediately began overseeing the new territory. He stationed New Guinean police officers at a series of checkpoints. They were tasked with maintaining order, constructing roads, and bringing peace to Europe. Maintaining calm was challenging and ultimately unsuccessful. After two missionaries were murdered by the Simbu people in 1934 and 1935, Jim spent two months pursuing the perpetrators, during which time he fought off attacks, shot attackers, and brought 67 detainees to Salamaua for trial. He was first posted to Wau in January of 1937, and then to Manus in August of the same year, both as acting district officers. Though he’d been feeling outcast, in October he was given command of the Hagen-Sepik Patrol.

Taylor, with John Black as his second-in-command, embarked on the 15-month expedition in March 1938. With up to 300 men and a total distance traveled of almost 1900 miles, it was the largest and longest patrol in New Guinea’s history. It deciphered the terrain between Mount Hagen and the Netherlands New Guinea (Indonesian) border, discovered the Porgera goldfield, and developed wireless and air supply technologies. The 1933 trek, albeit difficult, was ultimately fruitless, as it was immediately followed by World War II, during which maps and other information that could have been useful to the Japanese were hidden. Taylor was accepted as a Member of the Royal Geographical Society in November of 1941.

Taylor was serving on the Sepik coast as an assistant district officer in Aitape when the Japanese invasion began. On 14 February 1942, he enlisted in the AIF, and by August, he was given the rank of acting lieutenant in the Australian New Guinea Administrative Unit. Beginning in March, he served as the new assistant district officer in Angoram, taking over for George Ellis. Ellis refused to surrender, so on March 20 he and his squad of 48 police officers ambushed Taylor’s soldiers. After being shot in the crotch, Taylor fled downriver.

Ellis ended his life with a gunshot. When the Japanese invaded, Taylor remained in the wilderness, ambushing patrols and garrisons, saving Allied airmen, reporting on the whereabouts of troops and planes, and bringing civilians inside to deny the invaders access to forced labor. When he was given a month of leave in September 1943, he decided to spend it in Australia. In February 1944, at a conference of senior officers discussing the future of New Guinea, he spoke for the advancement of local people, earning him opponents among Europeans. As the Bena Bena district officer, he went back to the Highlands in March.
