James Napier Robertson Bio, Life, and Career:

James William Napier Robertson is a New Zealand writer, film director, actor, and producer. He is best known for writing and directing the films I’m Not Harry Jenson (2009) and The Dark Horse (2014), for which he won the awards for Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Film at the 2014 New Zealand Film Awards, and which was hailed by New Zealand critics as “One of the greatest New Zealand films ever made.” Robertson was born in New Zealand on March 24, 1982.

Robertson also served as a writer and director for two episodes of the crime drama Romper Stomper, which won the Logie Award. Earlier in his career, Robertson appeared as an actor in Shakespearean theatre productions and several television productions, including Being Eve and The Tribe. Robertson has described how his acting work “funded his early filmmaking.”Robertson was raised in Devonport and went to Takapuna Grammar School, where he made his acting debut in Shakespeare productions and musicals. Robertson was born in Wellington, New Zealand, although his family moved to Auckland when he was a little child.

His aunt is the actress Jessica Napier, and his uncle is the actor Marshall Napier. His cousin is also an actress and is Marshall’s daughter. Also, he shares a family connection with the famous author Charles Dickens. In his late teens, Robertson became a member of a regional outdoor Shakespeare Theatre Company, with which he was associated for a period of years and with which he frequently appeared at the Pumphouse Theatre Amphitheatre.  He has stated that his time spent acting with the company is his favorite of all his acting experiences.

After this period of time, he was cast in a variety of television shows, both locally and internationally, in which he continued to appear for the subsequent few years, both in supporting and leading parts. Initially, he was cast in Being Eve as Jared Preston, a wayward teenager who attended the titular Eve school. Subsequently, he appeared in Shortland Street and Mercy Peak as Luke Bertram, an arsonist who dealt with the death of his mother by burning down local buildings until he was caught by the police.

In 2002, Robertson was cast in the UK show The Tribe for two seasons. The Tribe is a post-apocalyptic series about a virus that has killed out all adults, leaving only young people to fight amongst themselves. Robertson was cast in the show in 2002. In 2004, he was cast as a lead actor on the American television show Power Rangers Dino Thunder for one season. His character, Conner McKnight, was a soccer player who doubled as the Red Ranger.

The show was produced in New Zealand and had an almost completely New Zealand cast, with the exception of Tom Hern, a friend of the producer who would later become Tom Hern. During this time period, he stated that he was less interested in acting, and instead used the money from these programs to purchase film equipment and support the short films that he was writing and directing when he was in his early twenties. I’m Not Harry Jenson was

Robertson’s first feature film, which he wrote and directed when he was in the middle of his twenties. His good friends Tom Hern and Edward Sampson were both involved in the production of the movie in some capacity. The movie had its world premiere at the New Zealand International Film Festival in 2009, and it was shortlisted for the award for Best Picture at the AFTAs in 2009. (New Zealand Film and TV Awards).

Rialto Distribution gave it a wide theatre distribution in New Zealand from January to March 2010, during which it received positive reviews but had a disappointing box office performance. 2010 marked the beginning of the production of Robertson’s second feature film, The Dark Horse, which was inspired by the true tale of Genesis Potini, a Maori chess player who battled severe mental disorder throughout his life.

During the time that Robertson was working on the screenplay, he reportedly became extremely good friends with Potini and competed against him in a large number of games of chess.  Robertson has been a devoted chess player ever since he was a little boy, and he has stated that his love of the game was one of the factors that led to the creation of The Dark Horse.

Robertson has stated that he has been a vegetarian from the age of four owing to his compassion for animals, and he has been a member of Greenpeace for the majority of his life. This is because Greenpeace campaigns against the use of animal products in food. Along with Academy Award–winning actress Anna Paquin, the animal rights organization SAFE gave him the title of “Hottest Vegetarian of 2014” as a means of drawing attention to the need to reduce cruelty to animals. Robertson is a married man with two small children, a son who was born in 2016 and a daughter who resides with him in Auckland. Both of Robertson’s children were born in New Zealand.
