Jana Schmieding Bio, Life and Career:

Jana Schmieding is a comedian, actor, podcaster, and writer. She is Cheyenne River Lakota, which is a tribe that is located in the United States. She is best known for her roles as the host of the podcast Woman of Size, as a writer and actor on the sitcom Rutherford Falls, and as an actor on Reservation Dogs. She also has a small role in the movie Reservation Dogs. She claims that she was brought up “pretty traditionally in the Lakota ways” in Canby, Oregon, where she spent her childhood.

Schmieding is a woman who identifies as Lakota. She attended the University of Oregon in order to study theatre. Following graduation from college, Schmieding uprooted her life and moved to New York City in order to pursue a career in acting. She taught middle school and high school for ten years while also participating in improv shows at night with Magnet Theater. Her primary source of income was teaching. Schmieding relocated to Los Angeles in 2016, where she began working at a nonprofit organization that was focused on education while also making the transition from acting to writing.

Schmieding hosted a podcast titled “Woman of Size” between the years 2017 and 2019, during which she and guests discussed their personal experiences with discrimination based on their body size. After devoting three years to developing her writing skills, Schmieding was offered a position as one of twelve writers on the Peacock original sitcom Rutherford Falls. The characters’ relationships within a town in the northeastern United States and the nearby Indian reservation are the primary focus of the show.

The co-creator of the show, Sierra Teller Ornelas (Navajo Nation), who had previously appeared as a guest on Schmieding’s podcast, recommended her for the job and she accepted. In addition to his role as a writer for the show, it was revealed on August 10, 2020, that Schmeiding would also play a co-starring role in the show opposite Ed Helms. She has lauded the show for its portrayal of a contemporary Native American woman rather than one who is stuck in the time period of the Old West.

On April 22, 2021, Rutherford Falls was released with its first season’s entirety made available on demand for the first time. The performance that Schmieding gave on screen was praised in the earliest reviews. Saloni Gajjar, writing for The A.V. Club, referred to Schmieding as a “breakout performer.” She stated that “comedy vet Helms…meets his match in co-star and relative newcomer Schmieding,” who “balances Helms rigor with a down-to-earth and equally captivating performance.” Jen Chaney, writing for Vulture, referred to Schmieding as “a natural” and also named her the “breakout star” of the show.

The series was picked up for a second season in July 2021, and Schmieding will continue to contribute to it in the roles of co-star and writer. The first episode of the season aired on June 16, 2022.
