Janina Jeff Bio, Life, and Career:
Janina M. Jeff whose name is pronounced juh-NEE-nuh and who was born on September 10, 1985, is a geneticist working for Illumina in the United States. In addition to her interest in science communication, her primary research focus is on the identification of genetic variants that explain differences in disease prevalence between populations. She made history by becoming the first person of African American descent to graduate from Vanderbilt University with a doctoral degree in human genetics. In “Those Genes,” a podcast show that explores the connections between genetics, African American identity, and Black culture, Jeff serves as both the host and executive producer. Jeff is the recipient of the Advocacy Award from the American Society for Human Genetics (ASHG) in 2020.
In addition, he was the champion of the first Spotify Sound-Up Bootcamp in 2018. Jeff identifies herself as a genetic-“SIS” and a storyteller throughout the podcast. Jeff holds the attention of her audience by sharing both her personal experiences and her expertise in the sciences. As she was growing up, she “asked big questions, set her own course, connected with her community, and then founded work that fit her,” according to Jeff’s recollection. When she was younger, she questioned everything, and when she didn’t know the answer, she viewed it as a barrier; however, now that she is older, she sees it as an opportunity. Jeff goes over the various ways that the human genome can provide data that, in the end, can lead to the development of treatments for diseases.
Her primary focus is on African American communities, which she recognizes as being underserved in the field of genetics research. Jeff was born and raised in New Orleans, where he also received his secondary education at McDonogh 35 Senior High School and his undergraduate degree in Biology from Spelman College in 2007. She received the RISE (Research Initiative for Science Enhancement) Scholarship while she was a student at Spelman. In 2011, she graduated from Vanderbilt University with a Master of Science in Applied Statistics, and in 2012, she received a Doctor of Philosophy in Human Genetics from that same institution.
She made history by becoming the first person of African-American descent to earn a Ph.D. in Human Genetics from Vanderbilt University. Her postgraduate education was split between the Center for Human Genetic Research at Vanderbilt University and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Both institutions are in the state of Tennessee. At Illumina, where Jeff works as a Senior Bioinformatics Scientist, she is responsible for developing genomic pipelines that are utilized in population screening. Throughout her academic research career, she has concentrated on population genetics, paying particular attention to the study of admixed populations and the genetic risk factors of prevalent diseases.
In Those Genes is a podcast that draws inspiration from hip-hop and has won multiple awards. In Those Genes is a podcast that explores genetics and “the lost identities of African-descended Americans through the lens of Black Culture.” Jeff is the host of the show as well as the executive producer of the podcast. Sam Ridell is in charge of production as the executive producer, Chris Diggins is the creative director, Chad Milner is in charge of music and audio engineering, Dr. Saida Grundy is the sociologist, and Stevan Smith is in charge of consulting.
In 2018, Jeff was named the winner of the first-ever Spotify Sound Up Bootcampwhich brought her the prize of $10,000 to use toward the launch of her podcast. IndieWire ranked the third episode of the podcast, titled “Skinfolk, Kinfolk,” as one of the top 50 best podcast episodes of 2020. In the Third Coast/ Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Competition, the episode “Dat Rona,” which featured a guest appearance by a medical expert named Ashira Blazer, was named the winner of the 2020 Radio Impact award. In the podcast, Jeff uses genetics to decode and uncover the lost histories and futures of people in the United States of Africa who are of African descent.
For instance, during the second season of the podcast, there was an episode titled “She Get It From Her Moma” that investigated the roots of long-standing beliefs regarding an inheritance that is prevalent in the Black community. Dr. Jeff has formed a partnership with the organization kickoff (KIN*koh*fah), also known as go get yo’ kin, to help African Americans learn about their own Black family history. Jourdan Brunson and Tameshia Rudd-Ridge, the company’s founders, drew their motivation from an ancient Adinkra proverb called “Sankofa,” which is spoken by Akan people who live in what is now Ghana and the Ivory Coast.
The concept of Sankofa encourages people to gain wisdom from their past and heritage in order to improve their lives and move forward. Kinkofa is a digital family history platform that gives African Americans and other people of African descent the opportunity to discover, document and save their own unique origin stories in order to preserve their own African history. kickoff has partnered with a number of other public and private organizations to amplify stories that honor the contributions made by African Americans to history and enhance the general public’s understanding of those contributions.
