Jerry Springer was the son of Margot and Richard Springer, who were both British. He was born in London. He was born during World War II at London’s Highgate subway station, which was being utilized as a safe haven from German bombers. Springer was raised in East Finchley by a shoe store owner’s father and a bank teller’s mother. The Springer family arrived in the United States in 1949 and settled in the borough of Queens.

His undergraduate degree is a Bachelor of Arts in political science from Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. Later that year, in 1968, Springer graduated with a J.D. from Northwestern. After completing law school, Springer met New York Senator Robert F. Kennedy at a social gathering. Unfortunately, the assassination of President Kennedy cut short his time working on Kennedy’s presidential campaign.

He experienced deep personal trauma from the assassination of Kennedy and resolved to continue promoting Kennedy’s political beliefs. Springer began his legal career in the Cincinnati, Ohio, firm of Frost & Jacobs. While at the legal firm, Springer spearheaded the effort to reduce the voting age from 21 to 18. As a result, he testified in favor of the 26th Amendment before the Senate Judiciary Committee and received official approval for it.
