Jim David Bio, Life and Career:

Jim David is a stand-up comedian, actor, and writer based in the United States. He currently resides in New York City but was born in Asheville, which is located in the state of North Carolina. On the recordStand Up! Records, David has published a total of five albums, the most recent of which was 2021’s Gay Jokes For Straight Cruisers, which debuted at number one on the comedy chart on iTunes.

David spent his entire childhood in the Asheville area of North Carolina. As a child, David appeared in a number of productions at the Tanglewood Children’s Theater and the Asheville Community Theater, beginning with a role as a munchkin in The Wizard of Oz. His parents were actively involved in the theatre community in their community.  In 1976, he received a degree in theatre from Furman University, where he had previously studied.

He started his graduate studies at Southern Methodist University, but then transferred to New York City in order to pursue acting. David worked as a high school theatre teacher in Long Island, sold office supplies, and, as he explained to an interviewer, “I did singing telegrams disguised as a chicken or a pink gorilla” before he decided to devote his entire career to stand-up comedy.

After working as an actor in New York City productions primarily off-Broadway for several years, David launched his stand-up comedy career in 1986. The critic Richard Lanoie of The Serious Comedy Site said that David’s “forte is an everyday observational comedy with a penchant for the absurd,” and praised him as “a bit of a chameleon” for his ability to create and inhabit a variety of characters due to his comedic versatility.

David does not shy away from political matters, including abortion, religious fanaticism, and issues pertaining to LGBT people, despite the fact that his stuff is not particularly political.  In the 1990s, David made his live debut onstage. When he appeared on Comedy Central Presents on December 10, 2000, he made history by becoming the first openly homosexual male comic to ever have his own special on Comedy Central.

This show aired on December 10, 2000. Between the years 2002 and 2004, he appeared on Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn on a consistent basis. On the season four premiere of “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” in 2004, he served as a comedy consultant. In addition to that, he has made appearances on shows such as The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The View, HLN’s The Joy Behar Show, Star Search, A&E’s Evening at the Improv, AXS TV’s Gotham Comedy Live.

BBC America’s The World Stands Up, Bravo’s Great Things About Being…, as well as on MTV, Showtime, and VH1.  He made an appearance in the film Radioland Murders, which George Lucas produced in 1994. David made his debut on Broadway in the musical The Best Little Whorehouse Goes Public in 1994. He played the role of the Las Vegas emcee and is credited in the show’s programme as “Comedian.”

He can be heard on the original cast recording released by Varèse Sarabande. David penned the majority of his own part, building on his previous expertise as a stand-up comedian. In 2010, David wrote, produced, and starred in the one-man show South Pathetic. The show is about a doomed production of A Streetcar Named Desire at a small Southern community theatre, and David plays himself in addition to ten other characters.

South Pathetic was about David’s experience writing, producing, and starring in the show. He has taken the action on the road all throughout the United States, including appearances at the New York International Fringe Festival and the Provincetown Tennessee Williams Festival. The act was described as having “rich with Southern flavour” by the New York Times, which also referred to David as “a persistently convivial trouper.”

David was recognised for his performance as a cabaret and comedy performer in 1998 and was given a Bistro Award for his efforts. He has been recognised as the finest stand-up comic by the Manhattan Association of Cabarets on nine separate occasions, and he has won the award three times. 2012 saw the publication of his novel, You’ll Be Swell (Trumbull Press), which told the story of an aspiring actress who, after falling overboard from a cruise ship, sets in motion a series of events that lead to her becoming renowned.

He contributed articles on a regular basis to both The Huffington Post and The Advocate. Jim David’s Icons was a podcast that David presented from 2011 to 2014. The programme featured a series of discussions with notable figures from the fields of comedy, politics, and the theatre. Recording for Gay Jokes took place in March 2020 on a cruise ship that was headed to Spain. The publication The Interrobang referred to it as intimate, multinational, irrepressible humour.

the phrase “an incredible blast” was used to describe it by Lanoie of The Serious Comedy Site. David’s ability to connect with his audience was demonstrated in this skit, which BroadwayWorld’s Bobby Patrick referred to as “a chaotic quilt of laughter.” Cindy Adams, who writes for the New York tabloid Page Six, extended her congratulations to David on the album, writing, “Jim David scribbled out Gay Jokes for Straight Cruisers while the ship he was on was sailing from Florida to Spain for nine days in March.

The ship had 4,100 passengers on board for its final cruise. Within a short amount of time, the comedy CD has already climbed to the top spot on iTunes. Beats recordings that Caruso ever released to the public.” David has produced a total of four more albums under the Stand Up! label. Two of these albums, Life From Jimville and Eat Here and Get Gas, have been remastered and published as expanded editions.

Live From Jimville was described as “quite enjoyable” by Lanoie, who also drew comparisons to Rodney Dangerfield.  In his review of David’s first three albums for Roctober magazine, Jake Austen was slightly less enthusiastic, calling David “a confident, veteran comic” but saying that he thought David’s material to be “charmingly lame.”

Jake Austen was somewhat less positive. David spent his entire childhood in the Asheville area of North Carolina.
