Jim Nantz Bio, Life and Career:
Jim Nantz is an American sportscaster birth on May 17, 1959. Since the 1990s, he has worked for CBS Sports, contributing to the National Football League (NFL) telecasts, National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I men’s basketball, and the PGA Tour. Since 1998, he has served as the National Football League commentator for CBS’s top play-by-play crew. Jim Nantz, a winner of three Emmy Awards and the National Sportscaster of the Year award five times, started working for the CBS Television Network in 1985. He is currently the lead play-by-play announcer for college basketball, including the NCAA Men’s Final Four, and the lead anchor for CBS’s golf coverage, including the PGA Tour, Masters, and PGA Championship.
He also serves as the lead play-by-play announcer for THE NFL ON CBS, which consists of the Super Bowl and Thursday Night Football games. In 2007, 2010, and 2013, Jim Nantz achieved a rare broadcasting triple by being the first commentator to broadcast the Super Bowl, NCAA Men’s Final Four, and the Masters in the same year. This accomplishment made Nantz the first commentator to complete this uncommon broadcasting triple. This trifecta will be completed by him once more in the year 2016.
The Pete Rozelle Radio-Television Award was bestowed to Nantz by the Pro Football Hall of Fame in August 2011. He is the winner of this award at the youngest age ever given. In addition, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame presented Nantz with the Curt Gowdy Media Award in 2002, making him the hall’s youngest-ever award winner. Nantz is one of just three announcers to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. The other two are Dick Enberg and Curt Gowdy.
The Nantz National Alzheimer Center (NNAC) was established on January 19, 2011, in Houston, Texas, in collaboration with Houston Methodist Hospital at The Texas Medical Center by Nantz, who had made Houston his adoptive homeland. (www.nantzfriends.org) The mission of the NNAC is to provide financial support towards novel diagnostic findings that will enable the early and accurate diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia in the hope that a treatment may be developed one day.
The National Neurotrauma Advisory Committee (NNAC) is concerned about the potential link between head trauma, such as concussions and other traumatic brain injuries sustained by sports, and the advancement of Alzheimer’s disease. Nantz’s father, Jim Nantz Jr., was himself a former college football player and has been a lifetime inspiration to his son, who is a broadcaster.
Jim Nantz Jr. had Alzheimer’s for thirteen years, and Nantz recorded his father’s journey in the immediate New York Times bestseller Always By My Side. The book, written in collaboration with Eli Spielman and went to No. 3 on the New York Times list, was the first and only sportsbook to gain such a high rating in 2008 and served as the impetus for Jim Nantz to establish the NNAC. One of his father figures and a close friend, former President George H.W. Bush, contributed the introduction to the book.
Peter Deutsch, a veteran of the wine business and the CEO of Deutsch Family Wine & Spirits, and Nantz came together to develop the Deutsch Nantz Alliance (DNA), which is producing an artisanal Sonoma fine wine brand called The Calling (www.thecallingwine.com). The Calling may be found online. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir were grown in the Russian River Valley. In contrast, Cabernet Sauvignon was produced in the Alexander Valley to produce The Calling wines, which were introduced to the public in June 2012 after being painstakingly constructed. The Wine Spectator edition published in July 2012 highlighted the first vintage. The 2010 Russian River Valley Dutton Ranch Chardonnay from The Calling scored 93 points out of 100 from the Tasting Panel.
Nantz began his career with CBS Sports in 1985, initially working as a studio host for the network’s college football and basketball coverage. He also worked as an on-course reporter for PGA Tour golf and called NFL games on Westwood One. From 1988 until 1990, when he was moved to television, Nantz called Sunday Night Football games for what was then known as CBS Radio Sports. Since 1989, Nantz has served as the main anchor for CBS’s coverage of the Masters Tournament.
After Brent Musburger was fired from CBS in 1990, Jim Nantz was promoted to primary play-by-play announcer for the NCAA Final Four men’s basketball championships. He worked with Billy Packer (1991-2008), Clark Kellogg (2009-2013), Steve Kerr (2010-2014), and Greg Anthony (2013-2014). Bill Raftery and Grant Hill were the commentators Nantz most recently worked with to cover the March Madness tournament.[10] Nantz announced that he would retire from basketball coverage in October 2022 to spend time with his family. Ian Eagle will take over in his stead.
At the University of Houston, where he was also recruited to play golf, Nantz earned his bachelor’s degree in radio and television in 1981 and became a golf team member. He was the first former student-athlete ever to give a graduation speech and be granted an honorary degree at the institution, which he did in May 2001 when he got an honorary doctorate of humane letters from his alma mater.
