Joe Don Baker Bio, Life, and Career:

Joe Don Baker is a well-known American character actor who was born on February 12, 1936. He has been a member of the Actors Studio for his whole career. He established himself as an action star with supporting roles as a mysterious cowboy drifter in Guns of the Magnificent Seven (1969) and as a deputy sheriff in the western Wild Rovers (1971), before receiving fame for his roles as a mafia hitman in Charley Varrick (1973), real-life Tennessee Sheriff Buford Pusser in the action film Walking Tall (1973), a brute force detective in Mitchell (1975), deputy sheriff Thomas Jefferson Geronimo III in Final Justice As Brad Whitaker in The Living Daylights (1987) and as CIA Agent Jack Wade in GoldenEye (1995) and Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), he is also recognized for his roles in three James Bond movies, where he played both a foe and a friend of the hero.

He is another reason why he is so well-known. Baker was the son of Edna (who was previously known as McDonald) and Doyle Charles Baker. He was born in Groesbeck, Texas. He received his Bachelor of Business Administration degree from North Texas State College, which is located in Denton, in the year 1958 after completing his studies there. He had a career in the Army of the United States.

At the ANTA Theatre in New York City, during the 1963–1964 Broadway season, he had an appearance on stage in the production of Marathon ’33. His career began on television, but he went on to feature in a number of movies, including an uncredited role in the 1967 movie Cool Hand Luke.

He appeared in a great number of television series, eventually moving to major guest appearances in shows like The Big Valley and Mod Squad, where he played roles such as an illiterate vending machine thief and a Harvard-educated Native American with a passion for fighting, respectively. He also starred in a great number of other television series. Telly Savalas portrayed him as the titular character in the television movie Mongo’s Back in Town, which aired in 1971.

Baker’s physical prowess, which included a drawl that was traditional of Texas, along with his height of 6’2″ (189 cm), made him an ideal candidate for roles in Westerns, both on film and on television. While he was working regularly on television on shows like Bonanza and Gunsmoke, he also appeared in supporting roles in films like Guns of the Magnificent Seven (1969) and Blake Edwards’ Wild Rovers.

However, his film career did not quicken until he scored the role of Steve McQueen’s younger brother in Sam Peckinpah’s Junior Bonner, which was a film about a contemporary rodeo cowboy and was released in late 1972. Baker made an appearance as the series’ major antagonist, “Day Pardee,” in the premiere episode of Lancer from 1968, which was named “The High Riders.”

This position was later fictionalized in Quentin Tarantino’s 2019 film, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, where it was renamed ‘Decoteau’ and played by Leonardo DiCaprio in the role of Rick Dalton. After that, in 1970, he made another appearance on the show as the character Clovis Horner. The film Walking Tall (1973), directed by Phil Karlson, is credited as being the film that launched his career.

Two years later, he had a role in the director’s final picture, which was titled Framed. When it was first released in February as a regional exploitation picture, Walking Tall connected with audiences and became an unexpected hit. The film is now being circulated for national distribution with a new television advertising campaign utilizing the phrase, “When was the last time you stood up and applauded a movie?” After everything was said and done, the movie grossed $23 million at the box office. Even though the prominent film reviewer Pauline Kael lauded his performance, he chose not to participate in the film’s follow-up installment.

Baker’s fame was bolstered in the latter half of that year by his work in the Charley Varrick series. In addition, he appeared alongside Robert Duvall in the crime movie The Outfit, which was released in 1973, and he acted in the action movie Golden Needles, which was released in 1974. In 1977, he appeared in leading parts in the films Checkered Flag or Crash and The Shadow of Chikara, both of which were co-starring Susan Sarandon and Ted Neeley, respectively.

To Kill a Cop was the first episode of a two-part television drama that debuted on April 10, 1978. Baker plays the role of a police detective alongside Louis Gossett Jr. in this production. Baker and Karen Black featured together in the 1980 miniseries Power, which told the biography of labor leader Jimmy Hoffa in a manner that was hardly concealed.

Baker portrayed the Whammer, a baseball player based on Babe Ruth, in the 1984 baseball drama The Natural, which featured Robert Redford. Ruth was the inspiration for Baker’s character. In the 1985 film Fletch, he played the role of the dishonest Chief Jerry Karlin. During his time in the United Kingdom, he appeared on BBC Television as CIA operative Darius Jedburgh in the drama serial Edge of Darkness.

He was up against his co-star, Bob Peck, for the award of Best Actor at the British Academy Television Awards, but he came up short. In the 1991 adaptation of “Cape Fear,” directed by Martin Scorsese, the actor played a private investigator who was hired by the protagonist, Sam Bowden (played by Nick Nolte), to defend his family from the psychotic ex-convict Max Cady (played by Robert De Niro).

In 1994, the University of North Texas presented Baker with its Distinguished Alumni Award. Baker attended that institution.

Baker stepped into the role of Carroll O’Connor on the television series In the Heat of the Night while O’Connor was recovering from coronary bypass surgery. Baker made an appearance in the role of Captain Tom Dugan, a retired police captain who filled in for O’Connor’s character while the latter was attending a police convention. He has made appearances in Joe Dirt, The Dukes of Hazzard, and Strange Wilderness in more recent years.
