John Gruber Bio, Life, and Career:

John Gruber is a technology blogger, user interface designer, and one of the people who invented the Markdown markup language. Gruber was born in 1973. Gruber is a native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in the United States. After graduating from Drexel University with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, he went on to work for Bare Bones Software (between the years of 2000 and 2002) and Joyent (2005–06). Aaron Swartz and John Gruber collaborated in 2004 to develop the Markdown programming language with the intention of enabling users “to write using an easy-to-read and easy-to-type plain text format, optionally converting it to structurally correct XHTML (or HTML)”.Daring Fireball is a blog that focuses on technology that has been authored and created by Gruber since the year 2002.

His writing on Daring Fireball has been defined by him as a “Mac column written in the format of a weblog.”  It was somewhat motivated by Jason Kottke’s kottke.org, which can be found here.  The site is published in the form of a tumblelog called The Linked List, which is a link log with brief commentary. The tumblelogs are interspersed with the odd long-form essays that explore Apple products and challenges in consumer technology relating to those items. Gruber frequently writes articles concerning user interfaces, software development, programs for the Mac, and Apple’s coverage in the media. The very first iteration of the Daring Fireball T-shirt.

The name of Gruber’s blog derives from a boyhood dream he had of being a human cannonball stuntman and performing under the act name the Daring Fireball. His costume was supposed to be “a perfect rip-off of Evel Knievel merged with the Dallas Cowboys,” and the logo for the blog (the Unicode character U+272A “Circled White Star”) makes reference to the helmet that he developed for the act. In 2004, Gruber began offering memberships, which require readers to make a yearly donation in exchange for various benefits and access to further benefits.

One of the benefits was access to more comprehensive feeds, but Gruber has played down the significance of the additional features, comparing them to “PBS tote bags.” T-shirts with the Daring Fireball logo can also be purchased, and each purchase comes with a membership. Gruber launched The Talk Show, a technology podcast, with the intention of using it as a “director’s commentary” to accompany Daring Fireball. Programmers, designers, analysts, and journalists frequently make appearances as guests. Gruber and Dan Benjamin started co-hosting an independent podcast at thetalkshow.net in June of 2007. The program features conversations and commentary on many themes, with a primary emphasis on technological advancement.

Only a select few of the programs that were produced while I was working at Mule Radio are still available. Some of the people who have appeared on the show more than once are John Moltz, Marco Arment, Merlin Mann, Craig Hockenberry, John Siracusa, Rene Ritchie, Guy English, MG Siegler, Ben Thompson, Joanna Stern, Brent Simmons, Om Malik, Jason Snell, Christa Mrgan, Dave Wiskus, Matthew Panzarino, and Serenity Caldwell. Other recurring guests include Merlin Mann, Craig Hockenberry, John Siracusa, RenGruber, Brent Simmons, and Dave Wiskus established the software development company Q Branch at the beginning of 2013, with the intention of developing the Vesper notes app for iOS.The endeavor did not end up being profitable, and as a result, Q Branch closed its doors.  Dithering was the name of a new podcast that Gruber and his close friend and business associate Ben Thompson launched in March 2020. The duration of each episode is precisely fifteen minutes, and viewers can have access to the show by subscribing.

This formula continued to be used, despite the fact that the show “began over” and contributed to the establishment of Benjamin’s 5by5 Studios network. The first episode of the show aired in July 2010, and by the time it ended in May 2012, it had a total of 90 episodes.  In May 2012, Gruber relocated the show to the network owned and operated by Mule Radio Syndicate.  This time around, Gruber made some adjustments to the format of the show, becoming the sole host and having different guests on each episode.

After 80 episodes, The Talk Show parted ways with Mule Radio in May 2014 and joined Daring Fireball as a regular segment. The show had a total run time of two years. The episode numbering system and show logo that was established at Mule Radio are still in use by the show. Although Gruber has been a steady presence across all four incarnations of the show, the archives of the show’s episodes have not always been stable. In 2016, Dan decided to do rid of the first 27 episodes that Benjamin had co-hosted with him.
