John Leguizamo Bio, Life and Career:

Born on July 22, 1960, John Alberto Leguizamo Peláez (/lwzmo/; Colombian Spanish: [leisamo]; pronounced /lwzmo/) is a Colombian actor. He is an American actor, comedian, and film producer who goes by the name. He has acted in more than one hundred movies, produced more than twenty movies and documentaries, appeared on more than thirty different television shows, and produced a number of other television projects.

In addition, he has written for and performed on the Broadway stage, for which he has been nominated for three Tony Awards: in 1998 for Freak, in 2002 for Sexaholix, and most recently in 2018 for Latin History for Morons. In 2018, he was presented with a Special Tony Award.

Leguizamo was born on July 22, 1960, in the city of Bogotá, Colombia. His parents, Luz Marina Peláez and Alberto Rudolfo Leguizamo gave birth to him. His father had ambitions of being a film director and attended Cinecittà for a time, but he was unable to continue his education there due to financial constraints. According to Leguizamo, his surname comes from the Basque region of Spain, and he also has some Basque ancestry.

According to the findings of the genealogy show Finding Your Roots, John Leguizamo does not have Puerto Rican, Italian, or Lebanese ancestry, despite the fact that he has asserted in the past that he has. A DNA test revealed that he is of Colombian descent and that his genetic background includes Native American, European (particularly Iberian), and even some African lineage.

His family is originally from Colombia. His great-great-grandfather, Higinio Cualla, served as Mayor of Bogota for sixteen years in the late 1800s and was regarded as a significant figure in the city’s modernization. His paternal grandfather was a wealthy Colombian landowner. Before this revelation, Leguizamo had asserted that he was Puerto Rican on his father’s side, which was one of the reasons he was picked as the Puerto Rican Day Parade Global Ambassador of the Arts and marched in the parade on June 12, 2011.

Additionally, Leguizamo had claimed that he was Puerto Rican on his mother’s side, although this was not the case. In an investigation that went further back in time, it was found that Leguizamo’s maternal genealogy includes the Spanish conquistador Sebastián de Belalcázar, who lived in the 16th century, as well as Jerónimo Betuma, an indigenous Colombian who was born into a noble family in the 17th century. In 1984, Leguizamo began his career as a stand-up comedian performing in New York City nightclubs.

Two years later, in 1988, he appeared at The Public Theater in two different productions, one of which was A Midsummer Night’s Dream, in which he starred with Fisher Stevens. In 1986, he made his debut on television with a supporting role in an episode of Miami Vice. His other early performances include a buddy of Madonna’s lover in her “Borderline” video (1984); a character in Mixed Blood (1985); a terrorist in Die Hard 2 (1990); a robber in Regarding Henry (1991); Hangin’ with the Homeboys (1991); Night Owl (1993); and Super Mario Bros. (1993).

In the film Whispers in the Dark, which was released in 1992, he played the role of John Castillo. In the movie Super Mario Bros., which was released in 1993 and was based on the Mario video game franchise, Leguizamo played the role of Luigi. In spite of the fact that the film was almost uniformly panned by critics and underperformed commercially, it was regarded as his breakout role, which opened the door for him to play more successful comedy roles in the years that followed. I

n the same year, he was cast as Carlito Brigante’s adversary, “Benny Blanco from the Bronx,” in Brian De Palma’s film Carlito’s Way, which helped him establish his reputation in serious parts.

In addition, Leguizamo played the character of Tybalt Capulet in Romeo + Juliet, the role of Violator in Spawn, Cholo in Land of the Dead, and Pestario ‘Pest’ Vargas in The Pest. The role of Pestario ‘Pest’ Vargas in The Pest was one of his few jobs as a lead actor in a studio film. In the 1995 film To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything!, he had a starring role as the drag queen Chi-Chi Rodriguez.

He also acted in the 1996 action film Executive Decision as Captain Rat, for which he was nominated for a Golden Globe Award in the category of Best Supporting Actor. Julie Newmar was the role for which he was nominated. He had a starring role in the film Empire, which was released in 2002.

As part of the marketing campaign for the film Moulin Rouge!, which was released in 2001, he participated in a celebrity round of the American adaptation of the game show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? alongside Kelly Ripa, Kevin Sorbo, Alfre Woodard, Martin Short, and Chevy Chase.

In spite of becoming the first celebrity to take a seat in the hot seat, he was ultimately unsuccessful in his attempt to win the top prize of $125,000. Later on in 2002, a question concerning the movie that featured his character came up on the syndicated edition of the show, and in response, Meredith Vieira revealed that John Leguizamo, in his role as Lautrec, had appeared on the show.
