John McCarthy Bio, Life, and Career:

John Michael McCarthy who was born in the United States on October 12, 1962, is a commentator for Bellator MMA and a former mixed martial arts referee. He is best known for officiating a number of fights that were promoted by the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) beginning with UFC 2.  Together with Josh Thomson, he hosts the “Weighing In” podcast, which discusses mixed martial arts and combat sports. McCarthy served for a while as a police officer for the Los Angeles Police Department before eventually calling it quits around the year 2008. In 1993, he became involved with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), which was a fighting tournament that had recently been established. He began his career as a UFC referee by serving as the referee for the very first UFC event.

McCarthy provided feedback that it was too dangerous and suggested additional rules, many of which were adopted. When the UFC first started, there were very few rules to follow because there were so few. It is common practice for McCarthy to begin fights by telling the combatants, “let’s get it on.” As a result, this catchphrase has become synonymous with McCarthy and the refereeing that he does. The fact that John was so tall and imposing led to the coining of the nickname “Big John.” He has a height of 6 feet, 3 inches (1.91 meters), and a weight of 260 pounds (120 kilograms), which makes him significantly larger than the majority of the athletes that he oversees. According to an interview that was conducted by the UFC, co-founder, and promoter Art Davie was the one who gave him the nickname. McCarthy recalls the moment that he forcibly lifted Davie off the ground and held him in the air, which was the beginning of the nickname.

In 2018, McCarthy took his retirement as a referee for the UFC and began working as a commentator for Bellator. McCarthy is the proud parent of three children: two sons and a daughter, one of whom has been officiating mixed martial arts fights since 2013. McCarthy calls the state of Tennessee home at the present time. McCarthy’s autobiography titled Let’s Get It On: The Making of Mixed Martial Arts and its Ultimate Referee, was released on the market on September 1, 2011. McCarthy made a brief appearance as a guest star in the episode of Friends titled “The one with the Ultimate Fighting Champion.”

In addition, McCarthy and the professional mixed martial artist Jason “Mayhem” Miller served as referees for the MTV2 series Bully Beatdown, which McCarthy was also a part of.McCarthy appears in the mixed martial arts documentary Fight Life, which was released in 2013 and directed by James Z. Feng. Fight Life won an award for best documentary in its genre. In the fifth episode of the third and final season of Entourage, McCarthy made an appearance.McCarthy was the referee with the most experience in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), and he is famous for his delivery of the phrase “Let’s Get It On!”, which was coined by boxing referee Mills Lane.

McCarthy was considered as much a part of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) as the octagonal arena itself because he was the key figure in the writing of the current Unified Rules for the sport of mixed martial arts (MMA), which are now recognized by the American Boxing Commission (ABC) and athletic commissions across North America. McCarthy served as one of the head referees for nearly every fight that took place in the UFC between the years of UFC 2 and UFC 77.

Roger Huerta fought Clay Guida in the main event of his 535th fight, which took place in Las Vegas during the finale of The Ultimate Fighter: Team Hughes vs. Team Serra. After this fight, McCarthy took a brief hiatus from officiating to pursue a career as a commentator for The Fight Network. However, he came back to the ring less than a year later. McCarthy has been working as a referee for a variety of MMA promotions ever since his return. Some of these promotions include the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), K-1 (Japan), Strikeforce, Affliction, Bellator, and King of the Cage.
