Jonathan Groff Bio, Life and Career:
Jonathan Drew Groff was born to Julie and Jim Groff on March 26, 1985, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in the United States of America. Jonathan Groff is a well-known American actor and singer, but he is most well-known for his performance in the rock musical “Spring Awakening,” which was staged on Broadway. After completing his high school education at ‘Conestoga Valley High School,’ he enthusiastically accepted an invitation to participate in a national tour of the musical ‘The Sound of Music.’
This choice redirected the path that his life will take going forward. Soon after graduating from high school, he uprooted his life and relocated to New York City, where he quickly became a member of the Actors Equity Association. He had his first appearance on the big screen as “Michael Lang” in the drama-comedy film “Taking Woodstock,” which was also his first performance on the Broadway stage, in the musical “In My Life.” Alongside his co-actor and close friend Lea Michele, he appeared in an episode of the musical comedy–drama series ‘Glee’ as a guest star.
He also made his debut on the West End stage with the play ‘Deathtrap.’ His work has earned him a number of accolades, including a Grammy Award in the category of “Best Musical Theatre Album” for the album titled “Spring Awakening.” As someone who is out in the open as being gay, he was drawn into a debate that was started by an article written by Ramin Setoodeh for “Newsweek” that stated that gay actors were incapable of credibly portraying straight characters.
The “Point Horizon Award” has been bestowed upon him in recognition of his “leadership role as an advocate of” the LGBT community. Jonathan has built a name for himself in the entertainment sector, and he also has a sizable fan base on various social media platforms. Jonathan was brought up in a strict Methodist household by his mother, despite the fact that his father was a member of the Mennonite faith.
Both of his parents participated in athletics when they were younger, but they did not place any pressure on their children to go into a specific field of work when they were raising them. During his time at Fulton High School, Jonathan indulged his passion for the performing arts by participating in a number of musical productions at the “Fulton Opera House.”
After receiving his diploma from ‘Conestoga Valley High School’ in 2003, he intended to enroll at ‘Carnegie Mellon University.’ However, when he was given the opportunity to participate in a national tour of the musical “The Sound of Music,” his life took an unexpected turn. Soon after, he made the move to New York City with the intention of beginning a career in the entertainment sector.
In 2005, he got his “Actors’ Equity Association” card by performing in the musical “Fame” at the “North Shore Music Theatre” in Beverly, Massachusetts. This role earned him membership in the “Actors’ Equity Association.” His first performance on “Broadway” was in the musical “In My Life,” which was written by Joseph Brooks.
Together with Lea Michele, he was a part of the ‘Broadway’ production of the rock musical ‘Spring Awakening’ from 2006 to 2008. As a result of his work in the musical, he was nominated for both the “Drama Desk Award” and the “Tony Award” for “Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical.” Both awards are presented annually.
During this time, he was also seen in the soap opera “One Life to Live” on ABC as well as the “Shakespeare in the Park” version of the rock musical “Hair.” In 2009, he had his first appearance on the big screen in the drama-comedy hybrid film Taking Woodstock, playing the part of Michael Lang.
In the year 2010, Jonathan had a recurring role on the musical comedy-drama series ‘Glee’ alongside his co-star and close friend Lea Michele. During the same year, he made his debut on the “West End” stage with the drama “Deathtrap.”
In the web series ‘The Battery’s Down,’ he made a cameo appearance as himself. In addition, he played the role of ‘Jase’ in the musical podcast titled ’36 Questions.’
In the 2013 animated feature film “Frozen,” which was produced by Disney, he provided his voice for the role of Kristoff, who was one of the main protagonists. In addition to earning him a number of prizes and nominations, the movie achieved the distinction of becoming the animated feature with the highest grossing of all time.
In the 2014–2015 season of the homosexual comedy series ‘Looking,’ which aired on HBO, he had a starring role. During this same period, he also appeared in the biographical war picture titled “American Sniper” as well as the television drama titled “The Normal Heart.” The voice work that he did for the short animated film ‘Frozen Fever’ was praised by critics.
