Jonathan Van Ness Bio, Life and Career:

Jonathan Van Ness was Born on March 28, 1987, in Quincy, Illinois to Mary Winters, the vice president of Quincy Media, and Jon Van Ness, a salesman, Jonathan Van Ness is the youngest of three children. His mother is a member of the Oakley family, who has owned and operated the Quincy Media media empire continuously since the 1890s.

He is the youngest of his mother’s four children from her first marriage; his parents split when he was five, and his mother remarried his childhood sweetheart four years later. Even though his mother, whom he considers his greatest friend, encouraged him to fully embrace his femininity, he nevertheless faced bullying and even death threats during his school years.

At age 15, Jonathan Van Ness got his first job: instructing young gymnasts at a community college summer camp. He stayed in that position for the next five years. His second job was in the circulation department of the family newspaper, where he dealt with customer subscriptions and complaints despite being the only sibling who did not join the family business.

He worked as a stylist at Aveda for a year and a half in 2005 and 2006, making ends meet primarily through tips, before relocating to Arizona and spending the next five years in the city of Phoenix and the neighbouring town of Scottsdale. Without much of a plan, he uprooted his life and moved to Los Angeles in 2009. He found work as an assistant at Sally Hershberger, but the money was so meagre that he spent most weekends back in Arizona.
