Jones Angell Bio, Life and Career:

Jones Angell, also known as Monrovia Jones Angell IV  was born on 1979 in Sanford, North Carolina, is the current “Voice of the Tar Heels.” He is the play-by-play radio announcer for the North Carolina Tar Heels football and men’s basketball programmes. Jones Angell is known professionally as Jones Angell. The majority of Angell’s childhood was spent in Jacksonville, which is located in North Carolina. He spent his childhood at home with his family, listening to the radio broadcasts of North Carolina Tar Heels football and basketball games, which were called by Woody Durham and Mick Mixon. Angell’s mother strongly discouraged him from pursuing his childhood dream of working as a play-by-play announcer for NCAA Division I games when he was younger.

Angell chose to study journalism and mass communication while he was a student at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, which at the time was known as the School of Journalism and Mass Communication. He began an internship with the Tar Heel Sports Network between his sophomore and junior years, and he considers this to be the experience that has provided him with the majority of his education.  Angell got his start in the broadcasting business in 1999 in Jacksonville, North Carolina, calling high school football and baseball games there.

Gio Bernard’s game-winning punt return against North Carolina State in Angell’s second season as the play-by-play announcer for Tar Heel football was the game that ended the Tar Heels’ six-game losing run against State. Angell called the play. His usage of the word “dadgum” was a wink and a tribute to the fact that basketball coach Roy Williams frequently used it. The portion of the 2014 Tar Heels baseball season that Angell called may be found on ESPN3 and WatchESPN. In addition to writing for GoHeels.com, Angell contributed to the now-defunct publications Tar Heel Monthly and CAROLINA: the Magazine. Angell is one of the hosts of a podcast called Carolina Insider, which debuted on September 20, 2016, and was produced in collaboration with Learfield Communications and the podcast provider Digital Media.

While Angell was still an intern with the Tar Heel Sports Network, he was given the opportunity to call play-by-play for a Little League Baseball game that was broadcast on WIZS. WIZS is owned by the Rose family, and one of the Rose children, John Rose, was working as an engineer with the Tar Heel Sports Network at the time. [ While Angell was a student at UNC-Chapel Hill, he continued to work as a play-by-play announcer for high school football games.  In addition to that, he began providing colour commentary for the women’s soccer and basketball games played by the North Carolina Tar Heels. Angell worked in a variety of broadcasting and presenting capacities within the Tar Heel Sports Network after graduating from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Before becoming the voice of the Tar Heels, Angell was best known for providing colour and later play-by-play commentary for Tar Heel baseball from the years 2000-2011. He also worked alongside Durham and his staff as a host and colour analyst for football and men’s basketball broadcasts from 2005-2011. Prior to that, Angell was the voice of Tar Heel baseball from 2000-2011. Angell produced many features while working as the assistant director of new media at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. These features have been displayed on the video boards at Kenan Stadium and the Dean Smith Center.

After making the announcement of his retirement in 2011, Durham’s replacement was the subject of a search that spanned the entire country. Angell was selected as the new voice of the Tar Heels after competing against a number of other potential candidates. Angell was informed of the news by the former general manager of Tar Heel Sports Network Gary Sobba and former athletic director of UNC-Chapel Hill Dick Baddour, both of whom flew out to Omaha, Nebraska, during the 2011 College World Series to deliver the message

Adam Lucas, an author of Tar Heel men’s basketball books, and a contributor to Tar Heel Sports Network broadcasts is Angell’s co-host on the show. Lucas has been a columnist for TarHeelBlue.com and GoHeels.com for a long time. Even as early as 2004, Angell collaborated with Lucas, who was in charge of providing colour commentary for Tar Heel Baseball coverage on the Tar Heel Sports Network. Angell requested that Lucas be allowed to co-host the podcast with him when Learfield volunteered to broadcast the programme by himself; however, Angell declined this offer. Prior to Learfield’s invitation, Angell and Lucas had been discussing the possibility of working on a podcast together.
