Joshua Malina Bio, Life, and Career:
An American film and stage actor, Joshua Charles Malina was born on January 17, 1966. He is most known for his roles as Will Bailey on The West Wing and Jeremy Goodwin on Sports Night, both on NBC. Upon graduating from Yale’s theatre program in 1988, the nerdy actor Joshua Malina landed a role in Aaron Sorkin’s Broadway adaptation of A Few Good Men, marking the beginning of a fruitful and long-lasting creative partnership. Malina’s cinematic debut was in the 1993 Hollywood version of Sorkin’s play, and he also participated in the romantic drama The American President, which Sorkin wrote. After a string of bit parts, Sorkin finally selected Malina as a lead in his critically praised ensemble comedy Sports Night.
Sports Night was canceled after only two seasons, despite winning awards and having a dedicated fan base. In the meantime, another Sorkin-produced prime-time drama was an instant critical and ratings success. Malina joined the cast of The West Wing in 2002, after Rob Lowe’s departure from the show. He had not been a part of the original 1999 ensemble. After her tenure on The West Wing ended in 2006, Malina didn’t spend any time in finding another TV role. Big Shots, an ABC business drama, cast him and Michael Vartan in 2007. After five years away from acting, he returned with a modest role in The First Time, a film by Jonathan Kasdan.
He plays David Rosen on ABC’s Scandal and is best remembered for his portrayal as Will Bailey on NBC’s The West Wing. His surname is Polish and comes from the word for raspberry in that language. In 1996, he wed Melissa Merwin, and the pair now has two young children. He got the concept for Bravo’s Celebrity Poker Showdown by watching Hank Azaria’s weekly poker games and then creating the show himself.
Following his role as Will Bailey on The West Wing, Malina featured in the critically panned Hank Azaria film Imagine That. Although Malina has stated in multiple interviews that the two performers and roles were too unlike to be considered as anything but a transition, the public originally saw his portrayal as an attempt to replace departed series star, Rob Lowe. Malina gained a reputation as an incessant practical joker during his time on The West Wing. Reports claim he slathered phones in Vaseline and reprogrammed Alex Graves, the show’s producer, into Mandarin Chinese on his iPod.
He played a practical joke on Bradley Whitford involving stolen letterhead stationery. At the suggestion of co-star Janel Moloney, Malina sent a $200 Valentine’s Day bouquet to season-six newbie Jimmy Smits that contained a message created on Whitford’s stolen letterhead stating: “Jimmy, You are a treat. I have loved every second of our time together. Don’t forget to be my Valentine.”
Malina tried to get the lead role of Danny Tripp in Sorkin’s next TV project, Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip, when The West Wing ended, but Whitford ultimately got the part. Some in the industry mocked Malina that he was Sorkin’s good luck charm when the program was canceled after the first season, but Malina referred to Sorkin’s upcoming film Charlie Wilson’s War as proof that Sorkin could flourish without him.
Malina joined the cast of the ABC drama Big Shots in 2007, but the show didn’t last long. Karl Mixworthy, the CEO he portrayed, was a married man who had a mistress who tried to expose him to his wife but ended up becoming friends with her instead.
Malina took part in the very first national television advertising campaign in 2004 to raise money for Jewish federations through monetary donations from the general public. Greg Grunberg, Marlee Matlin, Kevin Weisman, and Jonathan Silverman were among the “film and television luminaries celebrating their Jewish background and supporting charitable contributions to the Jewish community” who appeared in the presentation.
Jenny Busfield, Malina’s sister, and ex-brother-in-law, actor Timothy Busfield, introduced the two in 1992, and Jenny accurately predicted the marriage two years before the couple even met. Jenny’s sister, Melissa Merwin, is a costume designer whom Malina married in 1996. Melissa was guided to the Jewish faith by conservative leaders. The Malinas tied the knot in 1996 and now have a daughter named Isabel and a son named Avi.
