Jude Brewer Bio, Life, and Career:

Jude Brewer is best known for producing and hosting the podcasts Storybound and Storytellers Telling Stories. Brewer also has a background in acting. The writing Brewer has been published in literary periodicals on a global scale, and more recently it has been featured on podcasts and in short films. The author and reader who served as a judge for the 2017 UK Retreat West Flash Fiction Prize, Tania Hershman, has referred to Brewer’s work as “evocative.” “It is disturbing while also being amusing, moving, and bizarre. There isn’t a single word that is either too many or too few, and each word has been carefully selected; the voice of the character never wavers… This is something that I could read over and over and over again.”

Storytellers Telling Stories is a podcast created by Brewer, in which he narrates two of the short literary fiction works that he has written. Brewer’s voice acting was featured prominently throughout the fourth season of Storybound, appearing in various episodes and providing the voices of multiple characters During a 2021 Film Invasion Los Angeles (FILA) Q&A session for their film Your Heart Is Mine, FILA programmer Jeff Howard commented, “As the lead, Brewer carried this film superbly.” This session was held with Brewer and director Jake Whiston. At the Oregon Scream Week Horror Film Festival, Brewer was awarded “Best Actor,” and Your Heart Is Mine was awarded “Best Dark Drama Film” and the Programmer’s Prize. Additionally, Your Heart Is Mine was selected as an Official Selection at the Seattle True Independent Film Festival, the Oregon Short Film Festival, the Short Sweet Film Fest, and the Austin After Dark Film Festival.

The third season had a greater emphasis on exploratory cross-genre music compositions, many of which featured sampling that was developed and arranged by Brewer. Brewer wanted Storybound’s music “to take on more of a defined shape as [Storybound] began understanding [its] place within the dramatic podcast community,” so he started sampling breakout artists like Josh Garrels, MAITA, Xander Marsden, Anna Tivel, Oginalii, Marco Pavé, Gil Assayas of GLASS, Y La Bamba, and other Tender Loving Empire artists like French Cassettes. This led to Storybound’s musical shift  Brewer is credited for “original Storybound remixes” as well as sound design and arrangement in Storybound’s fourth season, which also proceeded to develop and build upon the show’s already established experimental shift.

Included among them are authors such as Chuck Klosterman, Morgan Jerkins, Omar El Akkad, Matt Haig, and Tamara Winfrey Harris. The fourth season featured more well-known musicians than previous seasons, including Portico Quartet, Dustin O’Halloran, Jaymay, Au Revoir Simone, Fake Shark, Zola Jesus, The Bright Light Social Hour, and Shook Twins.  It was revealed that Season 5 will premiere in 2022 and that it will have guest stars such as Debbie Millman, Dante Stewart, Stephanie Foo, Tommy Davidson, Dan Chaon, Imogen Binnie, and Daniel Olivas. The show went through a significant transformation in its fifth season, switching between author readings and interviews and mixing the formats of earlier seasons.

Around the beginning of 2017, Brewer started the podcast John Plays the Piano, which is a roundtable discussion of films. On the show, they dissect and discuss classic movies like Brazil, Being John Malkovich, and Small Soldiers. There are now eight episodes available.  According to Brewer, the John Plays the Piano podcast is currently on a “indefinite hiatus.”  In October 2017, Brewer launched the Storytellers Telling Stories podcast as a way to take a break from writing. He was craving something “more experimental and a little less predictable,” so he began experimenting with a variety of instruments while warping and distorting their sounds for the podcast.

The program has been referred to as an audio drama that “pushes the evolution” of podcasting. The basic idea was to generate a mental simulation of a movie in the head of the listener. This would produce a feeling of complete immersion in the experience without the need for any pictures.  Brewer is said to have been influenced by the film Lights Out, as well as by listening to concept albums as a teenager and outlining his stories and novels by following the track listings on those albums. In the final episode of the series, which aired in August 2019, Storytellers Telling Stories paid tribute to the late author Traci Foust by having 27 different authors recite passages from her work. Foust had passed away the previous year.

Storybound is a new podcast that was conceived, produced, and hosted by Brewer. In October 2019, Lit Hub announced a partnership with The Podglomerate, which resulted in the creation of the Storybound podcast. The show would investigate “family life to friendship, connections to histories, and how everything in life can be changed by the power of a good narrative,” as stated in the Lit Hub announcement that the show will be airing.  The first season was sponsored by Powell’s Books, and it featured musicians who had previously appeared on Storytellers Telling Stories, as well as critically acclaimed and best-selling authors like Mitch Albom, Lidia Yuknavitch, Matt Gallagher, Kim Barnes, Adelle Waldman, Diksha Basu, Nathan Hill, Caitlin Doughty, and Mitchell S. Jackson.
