Julie Andrews Bio, Life, and Career:

Born Julia Elizabeth Wells on October 1, 1935, Dame Julie Andrews DBE is a multi-talented English performer who is also known for her singing and writing. She is one of the few leading actresses to have survived Hollywood’s Golden Age, and throughout her career, which has spanned over seven decades, she has been honored with a number of prestigious awards, including an Academy Award, a BAFTA Award, two Emmy Awards, three Grammy Awards, six Golden Globe Awards, and nominations for three Tony Awards.

She is also one of the few leading actresses to have survived the Golden Age of Hollywood. She received the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award in 2007, the Kennedy Center Honors in 2001, and the AFI Life Achievement Award in 2022. In addition, she was awarded an Honorary Golden Lion. In the year 2000, Queen Elizabeth II bestowed to her the title of dame (DBE). Andrews began her career as a child actor and singer in 1948, when she made her debut on the West End.

In 1954, she made her debut on Broadway, in the play The Boy Friend. She rose to popularity in Broadway musicals, starring as Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady (1956) and Queen Guinevere in Camelot (1960), and was billed as “Britain’s youngest prima donna”. Cinderella, the television musical composed by Rodgers and Hammerstein, starred her as well and aired in 1957. Andrews made her debut in the role of Mary Poppins (1964), for which she was nominated for an Academy Award and ultimately won the award for Best Actress. She earned the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Comedy or Musical for her role as Maria von Trapp in the musical film The Sound of Music (1965), which she appeared in the following year.

Between the years 1964 and 1986, Andrews appeared in a variety of films under the direction of a number of different directors, including her husband, Blake Edwards, George Roy Hill, and Alfred Hitchcock. The Americanization of Emily (1964), Hawaii (1966), Torn Curtain (1966), Thoroughly Modern Millie (1967), Star! (1968), The Tamarind Seed (1974), 10 (1979), S.O.B. (1981), Victor/Victoria (1982), That’s Life! (1986), and Duet for One (1986) are some of the movies in which she has starred. She made her comeback to the big screen in the films Eloise at the Plaza and Eloise at Christmastime, both released in 2003, as well as The Princess Diaries (2001) and The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement (2004). In addition, she has provided her voice for the Shrek franchise as well as the Despicable Me franchise (from 2010 until the present).

In addition to this, Andrews is famous for her work with Carol Burnett, which includes the television programs Julie and Carol at Carnegie Hall (1962), Julie and Carol at Lincoln Center (1971), and Julie and Carol: Together Again (1989). She was the headliner of her very own variety show in 1973 called The Julie Andrews Hour, for which she was awarded the Emmy for Outstanding Variety Musical Series. Most recently, she was involved in the co-creation and hosting of Julie’s Greenroom (2017), as well as providing her voice for the character of Lady Whistledown in the Netflix series Bridgerton (2020-present).

She has also written two autobiographies, Home: A Memoir of My Early Years (2008) and Home Work: A Memoir of My Hollywood Years (2019), which she has co-authored with her daughter. Together, they have written a number of books for children. Her parents eventually had a divorce after the onset of World War II because it caused them to go their separate ways. Both Barbara and Ted Wells remarried after their first spouses passed away during World War II. Barbara wed Ted Andrews in 1943, while Ted Wells wed Winifred Maud (Hyde) Birkhead in 1944.

Winifred Maud (Hyde) Birkhead was a war widow and a former hairstylist at a war work plant that employed both of them in Hinchley Wood, Surrey. During the Blitz, Wells helped with evacuating children to Surrey, while Andrews’ mother joined her husband in entertaining the troops through the Entertainments National Service Association. Both of these activities were organized by the Entertainments National Service Association. In Surrey, England, Andrews shared a brief residence with Wells and her brother, John. In 1940, Wells dispatched his artistically gifted daughter to live with her mother and stepfather because he believed they would be in a better position to care for his daughter’s artistic education.

While Andrews was accustomed to calling her stepfather “Uncle Ted,” her mother recommended that it would be more proper to refer to her stepfather as “Pop,” while her father continued to be referred to as “Dad” or “Daddy” to her. This was a shift that Andrews did not appreciate, as she felt more comfortable referring to her father as “Dad” or “Daddy.” The war, according to Andrews, “was a very black period in my life,” and the family “lived in a bad slum area of London” at the time. He also stated that the war “was a very difficult time for me.” Andrews claims that her stepfather was a violent drinker who also had a drinking problem. Because he made two separate attempts to get into bed with his stepdaughter while under the influence of alcohol, Andrews decided to install a lock on her bedroom door.
