Kanye West Bio, Life, and Career:
Atlanta, Georgia is the place of Kanye Omari West’s birth on June 8th, 1977. Ray Sr. was a Christian counselor who had previously worked as a photojournalist for the Atlanta Journal and been a member of the Black Panther Party. Donda West, West’s mother, was an educator who rose to become a professor of English at Chicago State University and then her son’s manager. Sadly, she passed away at age 58 from a heart illness related to cosmetic surgery. Her death would have a significant impact on West’s life and music.
Ray and Donda divorced amicably when their children were three. After his father abandoned the family, his mother reared him in the middle-class South Shore area of Chicago. When West was ten years old, he and his mother Donda participated in a university exchange program that took them to China, where Donda taught and West was the only non-Chinese student in his class. When he got back to Chicago, West was lured to the South Side’s hip-hop scene, where he met DJ and producer No I.D., who would later become his mentor. West received a scholarship to attend the American Academy of Art in Chicago after graduating from Polaris High School, but he ultimately decided to pursue music full-time, a decision that informed the title of his self-titled debut album.
After years of producing for local performers, West came up with his own sound and termed it “chipmunk soul,” which is defined by sped-up soul sounds. In 2001, he packed everything and moved to New York. His breakthrough came as a producer for Jay-Song Z’s breakthrough single “This Can’t Be Life,” which was released on his debut album Dynasty: Roc La Familia in the year 2000. He had four tracks featured on Jay Z’s The Blueprint, one of the best rap albums of all time, the following year. After working with Mos Def and Talib Kweli, West moved on to produce for Ludacris, Alicia Keys, and Beyoncé.
Yet West was not willing to play second fiddle. He wanted to be the center of attention but had trouble getting his music regarded seriously. He begged Roc-A-Fella Records to sign him so he could rap, but the label ultimately turned him down, as co-founder Jay-Z said to Time magazine. As far as I’m aware, Kanye West has never held a job. I just couldn’t picture how that would function.” Similarly, positive reactions came from other record companies to West. When asked about his emotional state after meetings, he said, “I would frequently leave in tears.”
When Damon Dash signed Kanye West to Roc-A-Fella in 2002, it was with the understanding that West would remain in his role as a producer. In October of that year, West was involved in a head-on collision on his way home from a recording session in a California studio. The accident left him with a cracked jaw. He had jaw reconstruction surgery and recorded the song “Through the Wire” while his jaw was still wired shut. He finished the bulk of his first record while resting in Los Angeles. However, the album was leaked online after it was finished. To improve it, West rewrote the song’s lyrics and reworked the production, adding things like more intense drumming, gospel choirs, and string instruments.
On his second album, which took a year to record and cost West $2 million, he employed an orchestra and composer Jon Brion, who had never worked with a rapper before. The New York Times claims that West wanted to “explore how far he may stretch” hip hop since he was a restless bourgeois creative. As previously mentioned, “Diamonds from Sierra Leone” took home the award for Best Rap Song, and “Gold Digger” took home the award for Best Rap Album. When it was released, West’s album Late Registration went straight to the top of the Billboard 200 chart, a feat he would achieve again and again with each subsequent solo album.
“On Late Registration, the Louis Vuitton Don wants to be pop music, not simply produce it,” Rob Sheffield wrote in his five-star review for Rolling Stone. He then improves his lyrical skills, showcases his epic production ability, grows as an artist, challenges himself further, and proclaims the entire musical landscape to be hip-hop.
Just one month after Late Registration hit shelves in August 2005, West went on an NBC show to raise money for Hurricane Katrina victims. The first of many national media controversies he would cause was when he said on air, “George Bush doesn’t care about Black people,” echoing widespread criticism of the president for his delayed visit to the devastated city of New Orleans. The comment by West offended Bush, who subsequently called it a “disgusting moment.”
