Karl Malone Bio, Life, and Career:

Karl Anthony Malone is a retired professional basketball player who used to compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He was born in the United States on July 24, 1963. He earned the nick tag “the Mailman” and is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished power forwards in the history of the NBA. Malone played for the Utah Jazz for the first 18 seasons of his career (1985–2003) in the National Basketball Association (NBA), when he and colleague John Stockton were a fearsome force.

He won the NBA Most Valuable Player award on two separate occasions, made the NBA All-Star squad 14 times, and was selected to the All-NBA first team 11 times. His career total of 36,928 points scored places him third all-time in NBA history, after LeBron James and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. He also owns the record for the most free throws attempted and made, and he is tied with Kobe Bryant for the second-most first-team All-NBA choices, which is behind LeBron James and ahead of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

Malone attended Louisiana Tech University for his collegiate basketball career. During his three years as a member of the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs basketball team, he was an integral part of the squad that advanced to the NCAA tournament for the first time ever in 1984 and won the Southland Conference championship in 1985. In the first round of the 1985 NBA draft, the Utah Jazz picked him up with the thirteenth overall pick. Throughout his career, Malone participated in the postseason play of every single season, including the NBA Finals with the Jazz in both 1997 and 1998. His final season was spent with the Los Angeles Lakers, with whom he participated in the NBA Finals for the third time in 2004.

Malone also participated in the Summer Olympics for the United States of America in the years 1992 and 1996, where he was a member of the United States national team and won gold in both years. In 1996, as part of the celebrations commemorating the 50th anniversary of the National Basketball Association (NBA), Malone was given recognition as one of the 50 best players in league history by being selected for the NBA 50th Anniversary Team. In October of 2021, Malone was once again recognized as one of the best players in the history of the NBA when he was selected for inclusion on the NBA 75th Anniversary Team.

Malone was pursued by Eddie Sutton, the basketball coach of the University of Arkansas; but, he ultimately decided to enroll at Louisiana Tech University because it was located much closer to his family. Because of his poor academic performance, he was not eligible to play basketball as a freshman and had to wait until his second year to join the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs basketball team, where he played under coach Andy Russo. During his second year playing for Louisiana Tech (1983–84), Malone had a scoring average of 18.7 points and a rebounding average of 9.3 per game.

Louisiana Tech’s men’s basketball team concluded the 1984–1985 season with a record of 29–3, which was good enough to win the Southland Conference championship. The team also qualified for the NCAA tournament for the first time in the school’s history and made it all the way to the Sweet 16 round. Malone was selected for All-Southland honors in each of the three seasons that he played for the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs. Karl Malone was chosen by the Utah Jazz as the thirteenth overall choice in the 1985 NBA draft. According to the official NBA biography of Karl Malone, “If professional scouts had correctly predicted the impact Karl Malone would have on the NBA, Malone would have been picked much higher than 13th in the 1985 NBA Draft.” Malone played in the National Basketball Association (NBA) from 1985 until 1997.

In point of fact, Malone was so confident that the Dallas Mavericks were going to choose him with the eighth pick that he had already booked an apartment in Dallas in anticipation of the selection. Instead, Detlef Schrempf was chosen to represent the Mavericks. In his first season playing for head coach Frank Layden, Malone finished third in the voting for Rookie of the Year and had a season in which he averaged 14.9 points and 8.9 rebounds. This earned him a spot on the 1986 NBA All-Rookie Team.

The Rockets’ home winning streak of 20 games ended on January 14, 1986, when the Utah Jazz defeated the Houston Rockets with a score of 105–102. In that game, Malone scored 29 points, including four free throws, followed by a three-pointer by Pace Mannion, which allowed the team to rally from a 96–89 lead with 5 minutes and 36 seconds remaining to a tie score of 96–96. The Jazz qualified for the postseason for the third season in a row, however, they were eliminated by the Dallas Mavericks in the first round of the 1986 playoffs.

Malone made significant strides in the scoring department during the playoffs, averaging 20 points per game while posting below-average numbers in shooting (49.6% field goal percentage) and rebounding (8.9%). Following the conclusion of his second season with the Jazz, Karl Malone established himself as the franchise’s all-time leader in scoring (21.7 points) and rebounding (10.4 rebounds) on average. Between February 1 and April 3, 1987, Malone was the game’s leading scorer in 24 of 29 games.
