Kelly Carlin Bio, Life, and Career:

Kelly Carlin was the only child of comedian George Carlin and his first wife, Brenda Hosbrook when he was born on June 15, 1963, in Dayton, Ohio. His father was a stand-up comedian. She worked as a production assistant and photographer on two of her father’s early HBO specials, namely George Carlin: Again! and Carlin on Campus. This was the beginning of her career in the entertainment industry. By the time she graduated from UCLA with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications Studies in 1993, she had already divorced her first spouse and moved on with her life.  Carlin adheres to the Buddhist faith.  Robert McCall, Carlin’s second spouse, collaborated with Carlin in the writing of the episode “George Pulls the Plug,” which aired as part of the second season of The George Carlin Show in 1994.

She also collaborated on the screenplay for the film Devil in the Flesh, which was released in 1998 and starred Rose McGowan. She began to move away from mainstream media in the late 1990s and began writing, producing, and hosting an early Internet series. In addition, she began performing a one-person show titled “Driven to Distraction” about her childhood, struggles with drugs and alcohol, poor personal relationships, and the untimely death of her mother in May 1997. She initially expressed interest in pursuing a career as a therapist after earning a master’s degree in Jungian deep psychology in 2001, but she ultimately decided to go back to stage performing instead.

Following the passing of Carlin’s father in June 2008, the family and friends of Carlin had discussed the possibility of producing an oral history of her father’s life based on their recollections. By December 2009, she had, however, decided to abandon that effort and concentrate instead on writing her own memoirs. In addition to that, she started conducting interviews with great comedians for the CD series “On Comedy,” which was released by Marshall Berle’s Laugh.com, a website whose founding partners included her father.

Carlin has frequently presented her one-woman show, titled A Carlin Home Companion, which is a parody of Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion. In the act, Carlin discusses her childhood and how she was influenced by her famous father.  In addition, she was a producer for the second season of The Green Room with Paul Provenza in 2011. She also hosted The Kelly Carlin Show on Sirius XM Radio’s Raw Dog Comedy and Waking From The American Dream on SModcast Internet Radio for a period of time. In 2011, she worked as a producer for The Green Room. 2015 saw the release of her book, which bore the title A Carlin Home Companion: Growing Up With George.

The four-hour documentary George Carlin’s American Dream, in which she played a role in its creation and also had a hand in its production, was made available on HBO Max in 2022. Judd Apatow and Michael Bonfiglio are responsible for directing it. MSNBC had an interview with Kelly Carlin and Judd Apatow in the month of May 2022 in order to discuss the project. Most recently, she has done so in her highly acclaimed book, “A Carlin Home Companion: Growing up with George,” which was published by St. Martin’s Press in September 2015 and titled “A Carlin Home Companion.” Additionally, Kelly’s openness, sharp perception, and hilarious sense of humor are all on full display. It was described as “honest, scathing, violent, humorous, sad, dark, and profound” by Lewis Black.

And Jay Mohr discloses the true nature of her gift by noting that “this book is for anyone who has ever not been sure who they are. There is a location for landing. Allow Kelly Carlin to serve as your guiding light. Kelly Carlin began her professional career by working behind the scenes with her father, George Carlin, and mother, Brenda, on various shows for HBO. When she was a child, Kelly first explored her creativity by writing skits and doing impressions (her Ethel Merman was quite good for an eight-year-old). During her twenties, she tried her hand at acting and photography, and she also, shall we say, experienced a great deal of life and gained a great deal of wisdom. At the ripe old age of 30, she graduated from UCLA with a B.A. in Communications Studies in 1993. It was during her time at UCLA that she found her voice as a writer. Magna Cum Laude. She and her husband, Robert McCall, collaborated on writing projects and had some level of success in the television and film industries. Kelly discovered her true calling, autobiographical storytelling, after the passing of her mother in 1997. She went on to write and perform her one-woman show titled “Driven to Distraction” after this discovery.
