Laurie Anderson Bio, Life and Career:

Laurel Philips Anderson, better known by her stage name Laurie Anderson, was born in the United States on June 5, 1947. She is an American avant-garde artist, composer, musician, and film director whose work spans the genres of performance art, pop music, and multimedia projects. After receiving early instruction on the violin and in sculpture, Anderson went on to pursue a wide range of performance art projects in New York during the 1970s. He primarily concentrated on language, technology, and visual images in his work.

It was in 1981 when her track “O Superman” reached number two on the singles chart in the United Kingdom that she first gained widespread recognition outside of the art world. The next year saw the publication of her debut studio album, titled Big Science. In addition, she appeared in and directed the concert film Home of the Brave, which was released in 1986. Anderson is a forerunner in the field of electronic music and has developed a number of instruments that she has used in her recordings as well as her live performances of performance art.

In the year 1977, she invented a tape-bow violin by substituting recorded magnetic tape for horsehair on the bow and installing a magnetic tape head in the bridge of the instrument. In the late 1990s, she worked in conjunction with Interval Research to design an instrument that she referred to as a “talking stick.” This instrument is a baton-like MIDI controller that is six feet long (1.8 meters) and can access and duplicate sounds. Anderson first became acquainted with the singer-songwriter Lou Reed in 1992; the couple wed in April 2008 and remained married until his passing in 2013.

She was the daughter of Mary Louise (née Rowland) and Arthur T. Anderson and was born on June 5, 1947 in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. Her mother’s maiden name was Rowland.She was one of seven siblings, and on the weekends she participated in the Chicago Youth Symphony and studied painting at the Art Institute of Chicago. Glenbard West High School was her alma mater, and she graduated with honours. She started her education at Mills College in California, and then, after coming to New York in 1966, she continued her education at Barnard College, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts with honours and Phi Beta Kappa while majoring in art history. She graduated from Columbia University with a Master of Fine Arts degree in sculpture in 1972.

In 1969, she gave the first performance of her first performance art piece, which was a symphony played on automobile horns. She contributed to the underground comix Baloney Moccasins in 1970, which was drawn by her and published by George DiCaprio. Throughout the early 1970s, she was employed as an art educator, as an art critic for publications such as Artforum, and as an illustrator for children’s books. The first of these books was titled The Package and was a picture book that told a mystery only through the illustrations.

During the 1970s, Anderson gave performances in the city of New York. Duets on Ice is one of her most famous performances, in which she played the violin along with a recording while wearing ice skates with the blades frozen into a block of ice; the performance ended only when the ice had melted away. She conducted this performance in New York as well as other cities around the world.

The compilation New Music for Electronic and Recorded Media, which was released in 1977, features several early works by Pauline Oliveros, including “New York Social Life” and “Time to Go,” along with other compositions by other musicians. Airwaves is a collection of audio compositions that were created by a variety of artists. It includes two additional tracks. Also, she did a recording of a lecture for Vision, which is a collection of artist’s lectures published as a set of six LPs by Crown Point Publishing.

It’s Not the Bullet that Kills You (It’s the Hole) was Anderson’s first single, and many of her earliest recordings have either never been made public or have only been made available in extremely restricted amounts. This song, along with “New York Social Life” and approximately a dozen others, was originally recorded for use in an art installation at the Holly Solomon Gallery in New York City.

The installation consisted of a jukebox that played the various compositions by Anderson, and it featured all of the songs. On these early recordings, you may hear Peter Gordon on saxophone, Scott Johnson on guitar, Ken Deifik on harmonica, and Joe Kos on drums, to name a few of the players who participated. In Anderson’s retrospective book titled Tales from the Nerve Bible, the author included not only photographs but also comments and commentary on many of these early performances.

During the latter part of the 1970s, Anderson created a number of additional recordings that were either released privately or included on compilations of avant-garde music, the most notable of which were releases by the Giorno Poetry Systems label, which was run by the New York poet John Giorno, an early intimate of Andy Warhol. Anderson’s recordings were included on a number of compilations of avant-garde music.

In 1978, she gave a performance at the Nova Convention, which was a major conference attended by many prominent figures associated with the counterculture and rising stars of the avant-garde musical scene. Some of these individuals included William S. Burroughs, Philip Glass, Frank Zappa, Timothy Leary, Malcolm Goldstein, John Cage, and Allen Ginsberg. Other attendees included Frank Zappa.  In the late 1970s, she also collaborated with the comedic actor Andy Kaufman.
