Lisa Hanawalt Bio, Life, and Career:

Lisa Hanawalt is an American illustrator, writer, and cartoonist. She was born on June 19, 1983, in the United States. In addition to the comic series, she has three books of illustrations that have been published. She was both a production designer and a producer for the Netflix animated series BoJack Horseman (which ran from 2014 through 2020) and she currently co-hosts the podcast Baby Geniuses (which has been running from 2012 till the present) with the comedian Emily Heller. She is responsible for creating as well as serving as an executive producer for the animated series Tuca & Bertie, which airs on Adult Swim (2019–2022). Hanawalt was born in Palo Alto, California to parents Philip Hanawalt and Graciela Spivak, both of whom were biologists at Stanford.

Her Jewish family fled Odessa and settled in Argentina, where her mother was born and raised. Her family is originally from Odessa. Hanawalt received his Bachelor of Arts degree in painting from UCLA in the year 2006. The cartoonists Kate Beaton, Domitille Collardey, Sarah Glidden, Meredith Gran, and Julia Wertz were all former members of the cartoonists’ studio Pizza Island, which was located in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. She used to be a member of the studio. Hanawalt made history in 2010 when she became the first woman to ever receive an Ignatz Award for Outstanding Comic for her work on “I Want You #1.” Benny’s Brigade, a children’s book written by Arthur Bradford and released by McSweeney’s in 2012 was the first work of children’s literature that she drew. The protagonist of the novel is a young walrus that can talk and is saved by two sisters who have a variety of magical animals at the conclusion of the mission. Foreword Reviews referred to the book as “exuberant and inventive,” and 100 Scope Notes, a site that focuses on children’s literature, selected it as the “Wildest Book of the Year.”
