Mark Crislip Bio, Life and Career:

Mark Alden Crislip, who was born on April 25, 1957, is currently the Chief of Infectious Diseases at the Legacy Health hospital system. He specializes in infectious diseases and practices medicine in Portland, Oregon.  The names of the three podcasts that Crislip has produced are QuackCast, PusCast, and Gobbet o’ Pus. He is a writer for blogs relating to medicine, and he has consolidated the blog entries he has written into multiple books. Co-founder of the Society for Science-Based Medicine, he held the presidency of that organization from 2013 until 2019. The city of Cleveland, Ohio, is where Crislip was born. Between the years of 1979 and 1983, he was a student at the University of Oregon, where he worked toward earning a Bachelor of Science degree in physics.

After that, he attended the Oregon Health and Science University School of Medicine and received his Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree in 1983. In 1986, he graduated from an internship and residency program at the Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis. After that, he went on to finish a fellowship at the Harbor–UCLA Medical Center. At the moment, he works as a specialist in infectious diseases at a few different medical facilities located in and around the Portland area.  The podcasts QuackCast[6] (which he produced and hosted from 2006 to 2019) and PusCast were both hosted and produced by Crislip (2005–2021). As of the year 2022, he continued to publish episodes of his podcast Gobbet o’ Pus.

In addition to that, he is the creator of the medical app Infectious Disease Compendium: A Guide to Infectious Diseases, which is available for both Android and iPhone. In 2008, Crislip had an article titled “Near Death Experiences and the Medical Literature” published in Skeptic magazine. In this article, he critiqued a Lancet article that reported on near-death experiences without considering all of the physiological factors that may have accounted for patients’ subjective experiences. The article was titled “Near Death Experiences and the Medical Literature.” Crislip served as the president of the Society for Science-Based Medicine (SfSBM), a non-profit organization that provides advocacy, education, and a point of view. He also helped start the organization.

During each episode of QuackCast, Crislip gave a monologue on a different subject pertaining to medicine. These monologues were typically a critique of a practice or belief system associated with alternative medicine. After tuning in to the Slacker Astronomy podcast, it was that program that sparked the idea for him to launch his own science-based medicine show. On May 5, 2006, the first episode of QuackCast was made available for download.  The podcast was honored in the category of Health & Fitness at the Podcast Awards in 2009, 2010, and 2011 and won all three of those years.

Since 2009, Crislip has been hosting the Gobbet o’ Pus podcast, which is comprised of brief conversations on intriguing cases he has seen in his medical practice as well as other issues that are of interest to infectious disease specialists. Podcast, often referred to as Persiflagers Infectious Disease PusCast, was a review of the published research on infectious diseases that was published bimonthly until the beginning of 2021. Until 2017, Crislip was a regular contributor to the Science-Based Medicine blog, where he was designated as the emeritus editor.In those postings, he investigated several purported benefits of alternative medicine.

Alongside Steven Novella and David Gorski, he is one of the co-editors of a twelve-volume series of Science-Based Medicine Guides. These books are based on the content that is published on the Science-Based Medicine blog.  He contributes to the blog entitled Rubor, Dolor, Calor, Tumor, which is hosted on Medscape. Crislip has combined various posts from his blogs into two electronic books that he has dubbed Puswhisperer: A Year in the Life of an Infectious Disease Doc (2014) and Puswhisperer Part Deux: Another Year of Pus (2016)[20].

Between the years 2013 and 2019, the Society for Science-Based Medicine (SfSBM) advocated for laws that would support the application of science in medical practice and educated medical professionals and the general public about the significance of basing medical practices on scientific evidence.  On its website, the organization featured a wiki-based repository that contained information regarding medical practices that were called into question on Stephen Barrett’s website, Quackwatch.
