His tenure in the military spanned 20 years, from 1989 to 2011, during which he commanded a variety of operations in different parts of the world, such as Asia Pacific, Africa, Bahrain, and Iraq. In 2011, he reached the rank of Commander before taking retirement. Divine was born in Utica, New York, and went on to earn a degree in economics at Colgate University, where he also participated on the men’s swim and crew teams. Divine graduated in 1985.
After completing his undergraduate degree, Divine went on to earn a Master of Business Administration degree from the Stern School of Business at New York University (from which he graduated in 1989) in order to become a Certified Public Accountant. During this time, he worked as a senior consultant for PricewaterhouseCoopers, which was then known as Coopers & Lybrand. At the same time, Divine started a parallel journey into zen meditation and Seido karate under the instruction of Grandmaster Tadashi Nakamura. It was at this time that he made the decision to change directions and pursue a career as a U.S. Navy SEAL Officer.
Later on, in 2014, he established Unbeatable, LLC as a sister company to SEALFIT with the intention of bringing his five-mountain development training program to the civilian community in order to facilitate leadership growth. During the course of his professional career, Divine has authored a number of books on personal development and leadership, some of which are titled Unbeatable Mind, The Way of the SEAL, and Staring Down the Wolf. Furthermore, Divine established the Courage Foundation in 2017 as a 501(c) nonprofit with the intention of bringing more attention to the issue of veteran suicide by soliciting monetary donations in exchange for the performance of 22 million burpees (one million burpees for every veteran who commits suicide per day).On November 11, 2020, Divine accomplished more than he had planned.
After completing Officer Candidate School and being commissioned into the United States Navy in November 1989, Divine reported to Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) training in 1990. He graduated as the Honor Man of Class 170, making him the number one ranked trainee out of 185 starting candidates. Divine reported to SEAL Team THREE as an Assistant Platoon Commander and Platoon Commander after completing SEAL Qualification Training. Following his time with Team THREE, Divine was promoted to the position of Operations Commander of SEAL Delivery Vehicle Team ONE (SDVT-1), which was based in Hawaii.
In later years, Divine served as the executive officer of Reserve SEAL Team Three, where he conducted a variety of special operation missions in support of SEAL Team Three (1996–1999). Divine was then promoted to the rank of lieutenant commander and was mobilized from the Reserves to lead a Naval Special Warfare-wide initiative that was requested by the Department of Defense for a proof of concept deployment in conjunction with SEAL Team ONE. This deployment was conducted in order to study the proposal to bring the United States Embassy into Special Operations Command as a combatant command. Following that, Naval Special Warfare Group One awarded Divine a contract to plan and direct the final capstone certification exercises (CERTEX) for deploying SEAL squadrons. Divine was responsible for leading these exercises.
Later on, the Naval Recruiting Command (NRC) recruited Divine to create and administer a nationwide mentoring program with the intention of elevating the quality of individuals applying for positions in the special operations pipeline. During the final years of his military career, Divine served as the Executive Officer for both Reserve SEAL Team THREE and Reserve SEAL Team ONE. In this role, he was responsible for coordinating a variety of missions and deployments. After 20 years of service, he walked out from the military in 2011 with the rank of Commander (CDR). After completing his transition to the Navy Reserves, Divine established SEALFIT in 2007 with the intention of making it an immersive institution that would improve the quality of SOF applicants applying to jobs in the Special Operations Pipeline.
