Born in Trenton, NJ, Truex grew up in Stafford Township’s Mayetta neighborhood. The year was 1998 and he was a graduate of Southern Regional High School. Martin Truex Sr., his paternal grandfather, was a past champion in the Busch NASCAR Cup Series. Ryan, his younger brother, was a K&N East champion and a front-runner for Sprint Cup Rookie of the Year in 2014.
Truex and Sherry Pollex, his longtime love interest, began dating in 2005. The Martin Truex Jr. Foundation was established in 2007 to help children with cancer. Stage III ovarian cancer was discovered in Pollex’s body in 2014. After a police officer saw Truex urinating on his car in a public parking garage and reported him for disorderly behavior, he was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct in January 2007.
Truex was fined $100 and required to make a public apology after being caught drinking with teammates at a bar. Truex is a diehard Philadelphia Eagles and Philadelphia Flyers, supporter.
A tiny aircraft holding firm owned by Truex entered the human organ transportation market in 2019. Martin Jr., the son of legendary driver Martin Truex Sr., began his racing career in go-karts at Central New Jersey’s New Egypt Speedway, which was then a paved circuit (the track was later switched to dirt).
In 1998, when he was 18 and eligible to race in a car, Martin Truex Jr. moved up to the Wall Stadium Modified category (under New Jersey regulations). Truex relocated to Mooresville, North Carolina, in 2000, renting a home from Dale Earnhardt Jr. until buying his own in the area.
He began racing in the Busch North Series, following in his father’s footsteps. His career spanned three years, from 2000 to 2002, and in 2003 he only appeared in a handful of races. Truex drove his SeaWatch Chevrolet to 13 pole positions and 5 victories while driving the No. 56 for his family’s business.

Martin Truex Jr. Career
In 2001, at Dover International Speedway, Truex drove his father’s No. 56 Chevrolet in his debut Busch Series start. After a harrowing early wreck, he fell from 19th to 38th place. Truex competed in one race at New Hampshire International Speedway in 2002 as a member of Phoenix Racing, starting 13th and finishing 29th. He ran three more races for his father the rest of the season, with his best finish of 17th at Dover.
Since 2006, Truex has raced the No. 1 DEI Chevy in the Nextel Cup Series exclusively. He achieved two podium finishes in the top five and was the 19th best overall finisher. A win in this year’s NASCAR Nextel All-Star Open secured Truex’s ticket to next year’s challenge, where he finished in the top 10. His first Sprint Cup Series victory came just a few weeks later in the Autism Speaks 400.
He won by seven seconds over polesitter Ryan Newman, despite leading for more than half the race’s 400 laps. This triumph elevated him to the 13th position in the standings, where he remained after finishing third at Pocono Raceway and second at Michigan International Speedway. Truex qualified for his first Sprint Cup Chase with a 15th-place performance in the Chevy Rock & Roll 400 and finished the season 11th in the points standings.
Despite his lack of a victory in 2008, he finished 15th in the standings with 11 Top 10 finishes. After merging with Chip Ganassi Racing before the start of the 2009 season, Dale Earnhardt, Inc. adopted the name Earnhardt-Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates. Truex’s No. 1 was moved to Ganassi to replace Reed Sorenson’s defunct No. 41, and the move effectively closed down DEI.
Truex won the pole position for the Daytona 500 to kick off the year. Soon after that, at Atlanta and Phoenix, Truex had secured his first pole position since 2007 and two more later in the season. To receive owner points from Waltrip’s former No. 55 car, Truex departed Earnhardt Ganassi Racing after the 2009 season to drive the No. 56 Toyota Camry for Michael Waltrip Racing.
The No. 56 is known as the “family number” because it was driven by Martin’s father in the Grand National Division. Truex finished sixth in the Daytona 500 in his debut outing with Michael Waltrip Racing. It was a good start for Truex, who won the $200,000 bonus and finished 7th in the Daytona 500 to kick 2012 off. With a pole position and 69 laps led, he finally found his groove in Texas.
His next race was at Kansas, where he started sixth and finished fifth after leading 173 of 267 laps. Despite leading 40 of the 46 laps in Atlanta, he couldn’t catch Hamlin because of a late-race caution that necessitated a pit stop for fuel, and he finished fourth. Truex finished the race in 21st place, but he was assured of a berth in the Chase and was able to join it.
His final standing was 11th in the standings, with no victories, seven top-five finishes, and a total of 19 top-10 finishes. In their first season together, Truex and crew chief James Small only had one win, but they stuck with one other despite a crew chief shakeup at JGR the following year. In March, he claimed his first career victory at Phoenix International Raceway as he won the season opener.
Truex made his Xfinity Series and Truck Series comebacks in March. In March, he made his first Xfinity start since 2010 in JGR’s No. 54 at Atlanta, when he drove multiple races for MWR’s No. 00 and No. 99 cars. Following that, Truex became the first driver in 2021 to win multiple races when he triumphed at Martinsville for the third time in his career.
Truex won the Goodyear 400 at Darlington on May 9th, 2021, for his 30th career victory and the second time around the historic track. Truex, Kyle Busch, and Denny Hamlin were all involved in a crash at New Hampshire Motor Speedway when the rain came down.
