Mary Morello Bio, Life, and Career:
Mary Morello is an American activist who was born on October 1, 1923. She is the founder of the anti-censorship group Parents for Rock and Rap, which was established in 1987. Morello was born in the year 1923 in the town of Marseilles in the state of Illinois. In 1954, she attended Loyola University in Chicago and received her master’s degree in African and Latin American/Peruvian history from that institution.
She finished out the decade working as an English teacher in Germany, Peru, and Japan, in addition to having once sailed around the world on a cargo ship. Morello wed Ngethe Njoroge, an activist who promoted Kenyan independence from the British during the Mau Mau Uprising (1952–1960) and later became the first Kenyan delegate to the United Nations, while she was residing in Kenya between the years of 1960 and 1963. Ngethe Njoroge was the brother of Njoroge Mungai and Jemimah Gecaga. Morello was an active member of the NAACP and was involved in the Civil Rights Movement during the 1960s.
Abu-Jamal was convicted (although some believe he was wrongly convicted) of the shooting death of a Philadelphia police officer in 1982. She stated in an editorial that she wrote: “When a police officer is shot someone must be found guilty. To paraphrase what my son Tom has to say about it, “…all rational thought goes out the window.” Killing a police officer is the same as killing any other civilian. There is no distinction. They decide what field they want to work in. In 2007, Morello and Sheehan collaborated on a podcast under the name The Mary Morello and Cindy Sheehan Show.
Morello was married to the Kenyan journalist and diplomat Ngethe Njoroge during their time together. They only had one child together, Tom Morello, guitarist for Rage Against the Machine, but they got a divorce just one year after he was born. At the Pinkpop Festival in 1994, before Rage Against the Machine took the stage, Morello introduced them by proclaiming that they were the “Best Band in the Fucking Universe.” She made another appearance on August 24, 2007, during the Rage Against the Machine reunion show. At a concert given by Prophets of Rage on September 13, 2016, she referred to them as “The best fucking band in the universe” in her introduction.
She has been an activist for the Chicago Urban League for a significant amount of time. She was pregnant with their first child when she and her husband made the move to Harlem, New York, in 1964. It was there that she gave birth to their son, Tom. In 1965, Tom was one year old when his parents, Morello and Ngethe, got a divorce. After that, Morello relocated to Libertyville, Illinois, a small suburb located north of Chicago. She took her son with her. She is going to be teaching social studies and the history of the United States at Libertyville High School.
In 1987, after twenty-two years of service as a teacher, she decided to leave the profession in order to establish Parents for Rock and Rap, an anti-censorship counterweight organization similar to Tipper Gore’s Parents Music Resource Center. She traveled to the Soviet Union on three separate occasions, each time passing through Siberia and Mongolia.
In 1991, Morello and a large number of other people fought against a piece of legislation that was being proposed in Congress under the name Pornography Victims Compensation Act, which was later numbered S. 1521. Activism at the grassroots level was a contributing factor in the legislation’s failure to become law. She was honored with the Hugh M. Hefner First Amendment Award in Arts and Entertainment on June 24, 1996, in recognition of her work with Parents for Rock and Rap.
Morello started her career as an educator as a volunteer at the Salvation Army Rehabilitation Center in Waukegan, Illinois, in the fall of 1991. There, she was responsible for teaching adult literacy. She was an active member of the Cuba Coalition in Chicago, which campaigns for an end to the trade embargo imposed by the United States on Cuba. In addition, Morello is well-known for her participation in the debate that took place in 1999 regarding the incarceration of death row inmate Mumia Abu-Jamal.
