Mary Robinette Kowal Bio, Life, and Career:

Mary Robinette Kowal is a well-known American author and puppeteer. Her full name is Mary Robinette Kowal (née Harrison), and she was born on February 8, 1969.  She began her career as a puppeteer and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in art education. After that, she went on to become an art director for science fiction magazines, and by the year 2010, she had also written and published her first full-length novels. Her body of work is predominately comprised of science fiction concepts, such as interplanetary travel; a recurrent theme that appears in many of her novels is historical or alternate history fantasy, such as in the Glamourist Histories and Lady Astronaut series of books.

Her work is characterized by a strong female protagonist. Kowal has been an active member of the SF&F community, holding positions within the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America such as secretary, vice president (2010), and most recently president (2019-2021). The membership was dissatisfied with the panel selection process, and there was a general feeling that resources were being mismanaged in the lead-up to the 2018 WorldCon, so the board of directors appointed her to the position of chair of programming.

Since then, she has accepted a chair position at the 2021 WorldCon, which will now take place in the middle of December 2021 as a result of COVID-19. Since “Portrait of Ari” was picked up by Strange Horizons in 2006, her stories have been published over the years in professional magazines such as Asimov’s and Uncanny. This eventually led to her receiving an Astounding Award for Best New Writer. The majority of her more substantial works have been published by Tor Books. Her novels and short fiction have garnered acclaim and awards, including (but not limited to) four Hugo Awards and one Nebula Award. She has also received praise and accolades.

Her novel “The Calculating Stars” was honored with both the Hugo Award and the Nebula Award for “Best Novel” in their respective categories. This makes it one of her most acclaimed and well-known works. In addition to providing her voice for audiobooks, she continues to write and perform as a puppeteer. She and her husband make their home in Nashville. Mary Robinette Harrison was born in Raleigh, North Carolina, and she received her education at East Carolina University after completing her high schooling at William G. Enloe.  1989 was the year that she began her career as a professional puppeteer after completing her education with a degree in Art Education and a minor in theatre.

She has worked as a performer for Jim Henson Productions, the Center for Puppetry Arts, and her own production company, Other Hand Productions. In addition, she worked for two seasons on the children’s television show LazyTown, which was filmed in Iceland.  She submitted her application to take part in the Sesame Street Puppetry Workshop, and it was successful. After working as the art director for Shimmer Magazine for several years, Kowal was offered the position of art director for Weird Tales in 2010.

She was elected to serve as the secretary of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America for a period of two years was chosen to serve as the SFWA Vice President in 2010 and was chosen to serve as the SFWA President in 2019. She received the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer in 2008, which was her second year of eligibility for the award. One of the works that Kowal has produced as an author is titled “For Solo Cello, op. 12,” which was initially printed in Cosmos Magazine and later reprinted in Science Fiction: The Best of the Year, 2008 Edition. This particular piece was included on the preliminary ballot for the 2007 Nebula Awards.

Her short stories have been published in a variety of publications, including Talebones Magazine, Strange Horizons, and Apex Digest, amongst others.  Shades of Milk and Honey, which was the author’s first novel, was considered for the Nebula Award for Best Novel in 2010.  Her short story “Evil Robot Monkey” was nominated for the Hugo Award for Best Short Story in 2009 and her short story “For Want of a Nail,” which she wrote, went on to win the award the following year in 2011. She has also written other short fiction works.

Her novelette “The Lady Astronaut of Mars” was not eligible for the 2013 Hugo Awards because it had only been made available as part of an audiobook. However, it was subsequently published in text format and went on to win the 2014 Hugo Award for Best Novelette. The Calculating Stars, the first book in her Lady Astronaut series, was awarded the 2019 Hugo Award for Best Novel, the 2018 Nebula Award for Best Novel, and the 2018 Sidewise Award for Alternate History.
