Maureen Johnson Bio, Life, and Career:

Maureen Johnson is a well-known American author of books for young adults. She was born on February 16, 1973. Novels such as 13 Little Blue Envelopes, The Name of the Star, Truly Devious, and Suite Scarlett are some of her published works, and they are all leading titles in their respective series. Let It Snow is a holiday romance novel of interwoven stories that was co-written by Johnson, John Green, and Lauren Myracle. Johnson is also the author of a series of novellas that can be found in the New York Times bestselling anthologies The Bane Chronicles, Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy, and Ghosts of the Shadow Market. Let It Snow is a holiday romance novel of interwoven stories that was co-written by Johnson, John Green, and Lauren Myracle. Johnson was raised in Philadelphia, where she attended a Catholic all-girls preparatory high school when she was younger.

In 1995, she received an English degree from the University of Delaware, where she had previously studied.  In later years, Johnson held a variety of jobs, including those of a literary manager for a theatre company in Philadelphia, a waitress in a theme restaurant, a secretary, a bartender in Piccadilly, and an occasional performer in New York City. At Columbia University, where she earned her Master of Fine Arts in Writing degree, she pursued coursework in both writing and theatrical dramaturgy. The Key to the Golden Firebird, which was Johnson’s first published novel, was released by HarperTeen in May of 2004.

The letters were left to Ginny by Peg after she received news of her passing. Even though it is written in the contemporary realistic fiction style that much of Johnson’s earlier work is known for, Johnson herself has stated that she considers Ginny’s adventure to be “a little bit of a fairy tale.” She has also cited the song “Charmed Life” by Irish artist Neil Hannon of The Divine Comedy as having a likeness to the spirit with which the novel was written.  After that, in April 2011, the author’s second novel, titled The Last Little Blue Envelope, was released to the public. Suite Scarlett, which is Johnson’s sixth novel and the first book in the second series she has written, was released in May of 2008. The narrative delves into the experiences of Scarlett Martin, a young lady who has just turned fifteen and whose family lives in and runs the Hopewell Hotel.

The Hopewell is a local institution that is in need of both repairs and guests. It has been described as a small “jewel box of a hotel,” and it was built at the height of the Art Deco style in the middle of Manhattan’s Upper East Side. Scarlett investigates the dynamics of the family, the process of coming of age, and the peculiar opportunities that New York City presents to those who find themselves working in or in close proximity to the performing arts. As part of the Martin family’s custom, on the occasion of Scarlett’s fifteenth birthday, she is given the keys to one of the suites in their home, along with the responsibility of looking after the guests who stay there and keeping the suite in good condition.

The novel depicts three sisters of different ages as they individually process and come to understand their father’s death, as well as their paths ahead. It is set in the suburbs of Philadelphia a year after his passing and is centered around the themes of grief and resilience. The Key to the Golden Firebird was released into the market at a time when there was a revival in the public’s interest in the subgenre of fiction aimed at young adults. Both School Library Journal and Booklist awarded it with a five-star rating when they published their reviews in 2005. The Bermudez Triangle, Johnson’s second published novel (which would later be reissued as On the Count of Three in 2013), was first made available to the public in October of 2004.

The Bermudez Triangle follows three high school seniors who have been best friends since childhood: Nina, Avery, and Melanie. Since the summer, two of the three have been secretly dating each other. The story examines the complexities of relationships and self-identity, from the shifting nature of bonds to the experiences of platonic love and attraction, as well as the benefits and challenges of first romances.

It was chosen as a Book Sense Pick for the Winter 2004 season, and it was also included on the “Books for the Teen Age 2006” list compiled by the New York Public Library and the Popular Paperbacks for Young Adults, LGBTQ list compiled by the American Library Association.HarperTeen released 13 Little Blue Envelopes into circulation in the month of August 2005. The first book in a series, “Runaway” tells the tale of Virginia (Ginny) Blackstone, who is seventeen years old when it begins, as she embarks on a journey throughout Europe by following a series of instructions left to her within letters from her beloved, self-proclaimed “Runaway Aunt” Peg, upon receiving notice of her passing.
