How to Contact Meghan Daum: Phone Number

Meghan Elizabeth Daum is an American novelist, essayist, podcaster, and journalist. She was born on February 13, 1970, in the United States. Daum spent her childhood in both Austin, Texas, and Ridgewood, New Jersey, despite the fact that she was born in the state of California. She attended Vassar College for her undergraduate studies and then went on to earn a Master of Fine Arts degree from Columbia University. The majority of Daum’s twenties were spent in the city of New York. She relocated to Lincoln, Nebraska in 1999, and the experience served as the impetus for her novel The Quality of Life Report, which was published in 2003. The novel follows the life and times of an ambitious young television journalist who trades New York for the fictional town of Prairie City, and it investigates themes of social class in America as well as the contradictions of the “simplicity movement.”

She is also the author of two collections of essays, titled My Misspent Youth and The Unspeakable: And Other Subjects of Discussion. Slate and Entertainment Weekly both ranked The Unspeakable: And Other Subjects of Discussion as one of the top 10 books of the year. It was awarded the Literary Award for Creative Nonfiction by the PEN Center in the United States in 2015. Her writing has been published in numerous magazines and newspapers, including The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, The Atlantic, Vogue, GQ, and Harper’s, among others. In the year 2020, Daum launched a podcast called The Unspeakable, in which he and his guests discussed difficult and divisive topics.

Meghan Daum is the author of five books, one of which, titled The Problem With Everything: My Journey Through the New Culture Wars, was recognized as a Notable Book by The New York Times in 2019. Her most recent publication, a collection of original essays titled The Unspeakable: And Other Subjects of Discussion, was honored with the PEN Center USA Award for Creative Nonfiction in 2015. In addition to that, she is the editor of the book “Selfish, Shallow, and Self-Absorbed: Sixteen Writers on the Decision Not to Have Kids,” which became a bestseller in The New York Times. Her other works include the anthology of essays titled My Misspent Youth, the novel titled The Quality of Life Report, and the autobiographical work titled Life Would Be Perfect If I Lived in That House.

Daum maintains residences in both New York City and Los Angeles, California. Since 2005, she has been contributing her thoughts and perspectives to the Los Angeles Times in the form of an opinion column. At Columbia University’s School of the Arts, she works as a member of the adjunct faculty in the writing department. Both the Guggenheim Fellowship in general nonfiction for the year 2015 and the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in creative writing for the year 2016 were awarded to Daum. It was in 2017 that she held the position of Bedell Distinguished Visiting Professor in the Nonfiction Writing Program at the University of Iowa.

In 2015, Daum penned an opinion piece for the Los Angeles Times regarding the death by suicide of a transgender adolescent named Leelah Alcorn. The post drew criticism for denying that the Alcorns’ actions were driven by transphobia, as well as for linking criticism of Alcorn’s parents with transphobia. This was one of the criticisms leveled against the article. The post was condemned for a number of reasons, including the fact that it called on LGBT people to show Alcorn’s greater compassion.

Between the years 2018 and 2020, Meghan contributed columns to Medium’s GEN Magazine. Until the beginning of 2021, she also maintained a weekly blog for Medium. She contributed her thoughts and ideas to The Los Angeles Times in the form of an opinion column for more than a decade. Her writing has also been published in a wide variety of magazines and newspapers, such as The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, Vogue, and The Atlantic. She is currently teaching as an adjunct associate professor in the Graduate Writing Program at the School of the Arts at Columbia University, which is the institution where she herself was a student in the past.

Meghan is the creator of and host of The Unspeakable Podcast, a weekly interview program in which she talks with a variety of guests including authors, scholars, scientists, philosophers, entertainers, and others about “taboo” topics that nonetheless need to be discussed if society is going to move forward. Among her other works are the essay collection My Misspent Youth and the New York Times bestseller Selfish, Shallow, and Self-Absorbed: Sixteen Writers on the Decision Not to Have Kids, which she edited. Both of these works were co-edited by the author. Opinion columnist for the Los Angeles Times from 2005 till 2016, Daum’s tenure there spanned 13 years.
