Melissa Murray Bio, Life, and Career:

Melissa Erica Murray is a prominent academic and legal scholar. She was born on August 30, 1975, and currently holds the position of Frederick I. and Grace Stokes Professor of Law at New York University. Before he was appointed to his current position, Murray served as the interim dean of the UC Berkeley School of Law. Although he was born in Brooklyn, New York, Murray spent the majority of his childhood in Florida.

Both of her parents immigrated to the United States from Jamaica. Her late father was a dentist, and her mother was a nurse when she was working.  In 1993, Murray received his diploma from Lincoln Park Academy High School, which was located in Fort Pierce, Florida.  In 1997, she graduated from the University of Virginia with a Bachelor of Arts degree.

While there, she worked as a university guide service historian, was a member of the Washington Literary Society and Debating Union, co-chaired the College Bowl, chaired the fundraising committee for the Colonnade Ball Committee, and volunteered at the Learning Needs and Evaluation Center.

After that, Murray attended Yale Law School, where she worked as the notes editor of the Yale Law Journal before going on to earn her Juris Doctor degree in 2002. After graduating from law school, Murray worked as a law clerk for the Honorable Sonia Sotomayor, who was then serving on the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, and for the Honorable Stefan R. Underhill of the United States District Court for the District of Connecticut. At the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, she was the only African-American clerk that worked there.

In 2006, Murray became a member of the faculty at the UC Berkeley School of Law, and in 2011, he was awarded tenure there. For her article titled “Marriage as Punishment,” which she wrote while she was an assistant professor, she and Ashira Ostrow shared first place in the Association of American Law Schools’ 2012 Scholarly Papers Competition. In her research paper, Murray explains that “marriage has played a critical role in the operation of the criminal justice system, including serving both as a defense to crime and as a form of punishment.”

The following year, her article “What’s So New About the New Illegitimacy?” was honored with the Michael Cunningham Prize from the Dukeminier Awards for being recognized as one of the most outstanding sexual orientation and gender identity law review articles published in 2012. Murray, while serving as a full professor at the University of California, Berkeley, was recognized with the Rutter Award for Teaching Distinction in 2014.

This award “honors a professor who has shown an outstanding commitment to teaching and who is an inspiration to students,” according to the award’s official description. In the year that followed, she was given the position of faculty director of the Center on Reproductive Rights and Justice (CRRJ), which was the first law school think tank in the United States to concentrate on issues pertaining to reproductive rights and justice.  In addition to this, she became a co-author of the groundbreaking book “Cases on Reproductive Rights and Justice,” which was the first casebook on reproductive rights and justice. Following the departure of former Dean Sujit Choudhry from the UC Berkeley School of Law on March 22, 2016, Murray was appointed to the position of Interim Dean of the School.
