Michael G. Williams Bio, Life, and Career:

In 1992, Dr. Michael Williams became a faculty member at the College, where he taught courses in both the Botany Department and the Environmental Science Unit. Currently, he is working with the Plant Physiology team. The subterranean soil dynamics in agricultural systems are the primary focus of his research. Photosynthesis and respiration in higher plants and algae are other areas of interest.

Autumn, the only remaining flying city, soars for miles above the Earth and is teeming with people of all stripes and descriptions. These range from Human Plus “floor models” to the oppressed and disenfranchised underclasses doing their dirty job, and everything in between.

Autumn finds Valerius Bakhoum, a jaded private eye and street hustler, struggling to make ends meet. Valerius is trying hard to wrap up his brief life when a mythological relic from humanity’s fog-shrouded past walks in and hires him to complete one final job. Valerius has fallen behind on his rent, is a fetish object for some, and is loathed by others for his faulty genetics. Taking a stranger’s money develops into the largest and most perilous mystery Valerius has ever attempted to unravel, and time is running out for him to do so.

Most of the time when I say “horror,” “science fiction,” or “urban fantasy,” what I really mean is that I’m working on all three genres at once. There are always creepy undertones in my science fiction. Every time I write a horror story, it’s always more about the monsters than the people who confront them in otherwise recognizable settings. These two genres can be found in my urban fantasy. As long as there’s room for melancholy and original thought, any genre could work. There never seems to be a department labeled “distressing and creative” in any bookstore.

Many years ago, I tried to acquire an agent for my first novel, a suburban horror story about a vampire at a meeting of his HOA. The responses I got all boiled down to, “This is terrific, but no store would know where to shelve it.” Readers who seek to find novels they’ll appreciate can benefit greatly from genre classifications. As a result, they can limit the author’s freedom of expression.

When I’m stuck, I usually just have two of my WIP characters have a chat. Perhaps it has something to do with the events currently taking place in the novel, or perhaps it doesn’t. In all honesty, that’s not terribly relevant. Two characters discussing a horrible experience in private is one of my favorite sequences to write. That’s when my characters start spilling the beans about what drives them, and that’s when I know what’s next. Those are the best parts of the story for readers, too, since it feels like the characters are sharing something special with them.

I do! Nearly every writer pal of mine will swear they never do, but I always do. On occasion, I’ll go to Amazon or Goodreads to see if there are any fresh reviews or ratings. It doesn’t really concern me if someone didn’t enjoy a book I’ve read. Sometimes I wonder whether they simply didn’t get it, or if they misunderstood the book, but usually, it’s a sign that the marketing fell short. I’ve heard from people who were let down when the book fell short of their expectations because the blurb or another review led them to believe that there would be more romance, suspense, or even comedy. Good evaluations of my books are the single most motivating factor in keeping me at this.

If you read the Acknowledgements for New Life in Autumn, you’ll see that I talk about how receiving the Manly Wade Wellman Award for its prequel, A Fall in Autumn, kept me working when I was tempted to give up. But even the negative review was helpful, and I’m grateful that someone took the time to share their thoughts on the book. I’ll be eternally thankful to anyone who read it and took the time to write a review because that person gave me the gift of their undivided attention.
