Michelle Obama Bio, Life, and Career:

First Lady Michelle Obama was born Michelle LaVaughn Robinson on January 17, 1964, in Chicago, Illinois to Barack Obama, the 44th President of the United States. She made history as the first first lady of African American descent.

Michelle Robinson’s parents, Marian, a stay-at-home mom, and Frasier, a water treatment plant worker for the city of Chicago, raised her on the city’s South Side. Before attending Harvard Law School, she earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology and an additional degree in African American studies from Princeton University in New Jersey. After moving back to Chicago, she worked as a junior associate at the intellectual property law firm Sidley & Austin.

She first met Barack Obama, then a summer associate at the firm, in 1989. To fulfill her desire to serve the public, she took a job as an assistant to Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley in 1991. They tied the knot the year after she met Barack, a community activist. Michelle worked as an assistant commissioner at the Chicago Department of Planning and Development from 1992 to 1993, and then in 1993 she launched the Chicago chapter of Public Allies, a leadership-training program for young adults, where she worked as executive director until 1996.

In 1996, the same year Barack was elected to the Illinois Senate, Michelle accepted a position as associate dean of student services at the University of Chicago, where she was instrumental in coordinating the institution’s public service initiatives. She joined the University of Chicago in 2002 as its executive director of community and external affairs. The speech Barack gave on the last night of the 2004 Democratic Global Convention propelled him to national fame and helped him win the election to the U.S. Senate two years later. She joined the University of Chicago Medical Center’s administration in 2005 as vice president for community and external affairs.

Michelle Obama had a major role in her husband’s 2008 campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination after he launched his own candidacy. While still caring for her and Barack’s two young girls, she took time away from her job at the University of Chicago to focus on the campaign. Skilled in public speaking, she tirelessly campaigned for her husband, Barack Obama, throughout the lengthy Democratic primary race. On the campaign trail and in interviews, Michelle Obama won many hearts by being candid about her husband’s flaws and urging the public not to “deify” him. However, some of her statements were criticized by those who disagreed with her husband’s candidacy, as when she said, “for the first time in my adult career, I am actually proud of my nation,” when campaigning in Wisconsin in February 2008.

Michelle later explained that what she meant to say was that she was proud of the level of participation in the 2008 election process by Americans, and she remained an active participant in her husband’s campaign. Her ability to persuade undecided voters at rallies earned her the nickname “the closer” among the campaign staff. To become the 44th president of the United States, Barack Obama defeated Arizona Senator John McCain on November 4, 2008.

Michelle Obama was a vocal supporter of Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election, and her acceptance speech at the party’s national convention was widely lauded. In response to the campaign’s increasingly negative tone, she declared, “When they go low, we go high.” Clinton was defeated by Republican Donald Trump, who, throughout the campaign, erroneously claimed that Barack Obama was not a natural-born citizen of the United States.

Michelle mostly disappeared from public view after her husband’s term ended in 2017. But in 2018, she published Becoming, an autobiography that quickly rose to the ranks of the best-selling memoirs in the genre’s history. Even while politics were avoided for the most part, her criticism of Trump was a major point of concern because she thought he was a threat to her family because of his involvement in the “birther” hoax. With a production contract negotiated with Netflix in 2018, Michelle and Barack Obama took their book tour for Becoming on the road, which became the basis for the documentary Becoming. There was a podcast she hosted in 2020 called The Michelle Obama Podcast, and it was included on the music-streaming website Spotify. Michelle’s advice for coping with adversity, illustrated with stories from her own life, was published two years later under the title The Light We Carry: Overcoming in Uncertain Times.
