Nilay Patel Bio, Life and Career:

Nilay Patel is an American writer, editor, and blogger who has held the position of editor-in-chief at the news website The Verge for the field of technology since the year 2014. Patel attended the University of Chicago and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science in 2003. He then attended the University of Wisconsin Law School and received a Juris Doctor degree in 2006.

Patel’s first job in the blogging industry was at Gapers Block, a blog that focuses on Chicago. In 2008, he became a member of the Engadget team and was given responsibility for blogging.  Patel and a few of his former co-workers left Engadget in 2011 to begin working for The Verge.  In March of 2014, he parted ways with The Verge and began working for sister site Vox. After Joshua Topolsky left the position to take a job at Bloomberg in July 2014, he went back to The Verge in July 2014 and assumed the role of Editor-in-Chief there. Patel also serves as a co-host for the podcast known as “The Vergecast.

Nilay Patel, editor-in-chief of The Verge, was interviewed by Vanity Fair on the eve of the publication’s tenth anniversary to discuss the ways in which tech coverage (and the public’s expectations for it) have evolved over the past ten years, particularly in relation to a specific social media network that has been in the news recently…Even though it’s been a week since we started officially hearing about the Facebook Papers, there’s still a lot of new information being made public all the time.

Have you come across anything in the newspapers up to this point that has surprised you? The fact that so many of our presumptions are correct is by far the most surprising thing. We are able to conceptualize the inner workings of these corporations, such as the bureaucracy of a 100,000-person company that attracts significant political interest from a wide variety of players in a number of countries all over the world.

What the papers have demonstrated beyond a reasonable doubt is first, that the majority of those presumptions are accurate. And two, there is a significant amount of disagreement going on within Facebook itself. It is strange for all those people who go to Facebook, take the orientation, and are told how to behave at work, and then ship something that actively cuts against those values. Facebook has internal corporate values, so it is strange for those people to ship something that actively cuts against those values. What has become clear to us from the papers is that they are aware of it. I don’t think there are a lot of earth-shattering scoops in there, but the overwhelming outcome of the work that is being done with the papers is to put together a meticulous theory of the case of why Facebook has gone astray. I don’t think there are a lot of earth-shattering scoops in there.

When one considers the path that Facebook has taken, does one get the impression that this was always going to be the company’s inescapable destination? This is a situation that any competent monopolist from the past would have absolutely been able to avoid by taking preventative measures in advance. If you take a look at all of the different cell phone carriers, you will notice that they are all monopolies or duopolies; there is not much in the way of competition. But you do realize that the reason they don’t take the hits is because of the perception that they are national champions, right? Both AT&T and Verizon are confident that they will emerge victorious in the race for 5G. They are constantly lobbying and have a strong presence in the government thanks to their extensive involvement there.

This is something that other telecommunications companies have figured out. Facebook has maintained its independence. Because of the distance between them, this moment has always been an inevitability for them. They lacked an understanding of how the other enormous power in this country, the government, might seek to reassert itself, and how that process might be used by whistleblowers or by other people who wish to make a change. They also lacked an understanding of how that process might get used by other people who wish to make a change.I have a feeling that it is slamming into them like a truck. They are currently investing a significant amount of money in lobbying efforts and have begun publishing advertisements stating, “We welcome regulation.”

I believe that we have moved beyond breathless reviews of the latest and greatest gadgets, but at the same time, we continue to place a significant amount of stock in reviews because they give us a sense of power and control over a story. After considering everything that Apple has done in terms of the App Store, antitrust, and photo scanning, we can look at their phone and say, “This is a nine.” This connection has been an extremely important factor in the establishment of our authority. The only other area of the media that comes to mind where the loop is closed in such a way is sports, right? You could spend the whole day discussing different teams, but at the end of the day, one victor will emerge. When all is said and done in the world of technology, a product will be released, and people will either like it or not.
