Norah O’DonnellBiography

Norah Morahan O’Donnell is an American television journalist who was born on January 23, 1974. She now serves as the CBS Evening News anchor and a correspondent for 60 Minutes. Throughout her career, she has collaborated with a number of major media organisations, including as the former co-anchor of CBS This Morning, the Chief White House Correspondent for CBS News, and a fill-in host for CBS’s Sunday morning programme Face the Nation.

O’Donnell was born in Washington, D.C., the daughter of doctor and US Army officer Francis Lawrence O’Donnell and Noreen Bernadette (O’Kane). Her parents both have Irish ancestry and have Donegal, Derry, and Belfast roots (meaning she is descended from both sides of the Irish Border).

Her paternal grandfather spent 16 years in the country illegally, and she had three immigrant grandparents. Upon turning three, Norah’s family relocated to San Antonio, Texas.  When she was 10 years old, the family lived in Yongsan Garrison for two years while in Seoul because her father was assigned to work there.

She began her career in broadcasting while still in elementary school by instructing Korean Educational Development Institute students in filmed English classes.  After the family returned to San Antonio, she enrolled at Douglas MacArthur High School and graduated in 1991.

She continued her education at Georgetown University, where she earned a Master of Arts in liberal studies in 2003 and a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy in 1995. O’Donnell covered Congress as a staff writer for the publication Roll Call.  Her twelve-year career was spent working for the NBC networks.

O’Donnell was a contributor for the Today Show, the chief Washington correspondent for MSNBC, and an NBC News White House correspondent. She also contributed as an anchor for MSNBC Live and hosted Weekend Today. The Today Show, Dateline NBC, MSNBC, NBC Nightly News, and other NBC News programmes all used O’Donnell as a reporter.

O’Donnell was a frequent analyst for The Chris Matthews Show and served as a stand-in host of Hardball with Chris Matthews. She has worked as an anchor for some of CBS’s most popular programmes since she started working there, and she has frequently replaced Scott Pelley on the CBS Evening News, starting on October 10, 2011. In 2011 and 2012, she served as the main White House correspondent.

In the fall of 2012, she joined CBS This Morning as a co-anchor. O’Donnell was named anchor and managing editor of the CBS Evening News effective July 15, 2019, according to an announcement made by Susan Zirinsky, president of CBS News, on May 6, 2019.

O’Donnell will also serve as the network’s lead anchor for political events and will keep working as a contributing correspondent for 60 Minutes. She succeeds Connie Chung and Katie Couric to hold the position of the show’s weeknight anchor. On May 16, 2019, she made her final appearance on CBS This Morning.

O’Donnell’s contract with CBS News was extended on April 8, 2022, enabling her to continue serving as the show’s anchor through the 2024 election and beyond. O’Donnell and her husband, chef Geoff Tracy (the proprietor of D.C. restaurant Chef Geoff’s), whom she wed in June 2001, split their time between Washington, D.C., and the Upper West Side of New York City.

During their time at Georgetown, they became friends. O’Donnell and Tracy welcomed twins, Grace and Henry, into the world on May 20, 2007.On July 5, 2008, they welcomed their third child, a daughter named Riley Norah Tracy. According to O’Donnell, Tim Russert, who passed away three weeks before Riley’s birth, proposed Riley’s first name.

On August 31, 2010, O’Donnell and Tracy published a cookbook for parents called Baby Love: Healthy, Easy, Delicious Meals for Your Baby and Toddler. O’Donnell was identified as having melanoma skin cancer in the fall of 2016.

The official diagnosis was “melanoma in situ,” which denoted that the disease was limited to the epidermis and had not yet metastasized or migrated to the dermis. Immediately after, she had surgery, during which “a three-inch-long portion of skin from the top left corner of [her] back” was removed. She later claimed that because to her high risk, she now had “many skin biopsies” and routine skin examinations “every three to four months.”

Since receiving her diagnosis, O’Donnell has been an ambassador for skin care, urging others, particularly women, to have regular dermatological examinations and take better care of their skin by engaging in healthy skin care routines like utilising sunscreen.

In 2017, she and her dermatologist discussed her condition openly on CBS This Morning. O’Donnell is one of Washington’s 100 most prominent women, according to Washingtonian Magazine. O’Donnell was also included in the 2000 list of the “Top 100 Irish Americans” published by Irish American Magazine.
