Ole Nydahl Bio, Life, and Career:

Ole Nydahl, also known as Lama Ole, was born on March 19, 1941, and is currently a lama in the Karma Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism. He teaches the Mahamudra doctrine. Since the early 1970s, Nydahl has traveled the world teaching meditation and giving seminars on his experiences in the practice.

Diamond Way Buddhism is a Karma Kagyu Buddhist organization that he co-founded with his late wife, Hannah Nydahl (1946-2007), and it has over 600 centers for lay practitioners all over the world. More than twenty of Nydahl’s publications on Diamond Way Vajrayana Buddhism have been published, including translations into a variety of languages. These works have been written in German and English.

Nydahl spent his childhood in Denmark during the Second World War, and he was able to observe both of his parents participating in the Danish resistance effort and assisting in the transportation of Jewish refugees to neutral Sweden.

In the early 1960s, he served in the Danish Army for a short period of time. After that, he attended the University of Copenhagen to study philosophy, English, and German. There, he was successful in achieving the highest possible mark on the examen philosophicum.

He started writing a doctoral thesis on Aldous Huxley’s The Doors of Perception, but he did not end up completing it. As a young man, Nydahl was active in a variety of sports and activities, including boxing, riding motorcycles and race cars, and traveling multiple times on foot from Denmark to Nepal.

His adventures were funded by smuggling, a crime for which he was once apprehended and held in custody in Denmark, as he reveals in his autobiography, entitled Entering the Diamond Way. This story is told in detail in the book. He practiced meditation and read “Tibetan Yoga and Secret Doctrine” by Walter Evans-Wentz while he was held in pre-trial custody.

After being married in 1968, Ole Nydahl and his new bride Hannah went on their honeymoon to Nepal. They had their first encounter with a Buddhist teacher, the Drukpa Kagyu master Lopon Tsechu Rinpoche, while they were in Nepal. In December of 1969, the Nydahls had the opportunity to speak with Rangjung Rigpe Dorje, the 16th Karmapa and current leader of the Karma Kagyu lineage.

The Nydahls sought sanctuary with the 16th Karmapa and eventually became his students. This occurred nine years after Freda Bedi, a British woman, became the first Western student of the previous Karmapa. They went to the Himalayas to study and meditate, during which time they finished the Ngondro, also known as the preliminary practices, in a span of six months.

During this time, they also received explanations and empowerment for the 8th Karmapa guru yoga meditation practice as well as other methods. During this time period, the Nydahls went to Sonada in order to study under Mipham Chokyi Lodro, the fourteenth Shamarpa, the third Jamgon Kongtrul, and Kalu Rinpoche.

All of these teachers were located in Sonada. The Nydahls gained knowledge of Vajrayana Buddhism and Mahamudra from the Karmapa, who also passed on the transmission of the Kagyu Ngagdzo tradition to them. They received instruction on the Bodhisattva vows from the Shamarpa, as well as information about Gampopa’s Jewel Ornament of Liberation. In 1972, they received instruction in phowa from Ayang Rinpoche.

In addition, the Nydahls were instructed and empowered by a number of other Tibetan lamas, including the Dalai Lama, Dilgo Khyentse, Bokar Rinpoche, and Gyaltrul Rinpoche.[When the 16th Karmapa returned to Europe in 1972, he requested Hannah and Ole Nydahl to begin teaching Buddhism and organizing meditation centers, initially in their home country of Denmark, then in Germany and other nations. He also asked them to spread the practice of Buddhism throughout Europe.

The centers are part of the Karma Kagyu lineage and function under Ole Nydahl’s direction for their day-to-day operations. During the Karmapa conflict that occurred in the early 1990s, the Diamond Way Buddhism school was established as a means of defending existing centers.[As of the year 2019, there were a total of 635 Diamond Way centers located across the globe.

The majority of these may be found in either Europe, Russia, or the United States. Throughout the course of the year, Ole Nydahl makes frequent trips back and forth between the two of them to teach meditation and deliver talks. Up until the year 2013, Nydahl taught conscious death, also known as phowa, along with other Buddhist meditation techniques.
