The show takes the form of in-depth interviews and investigates the lives of people whose mental health has been affected by issues such as depression, addiction, fear, anxiety, abuse, and gender identity. The A.V. Club referred to Gilmartin as “a patient and compassionate interviewer,” while The New York Times highlighted that he had established “a perversely comfortable haven in which he and his guests chat about their phobias, addictions, and tragic childhoods” as a result of his hosting abilities.
