Paul Stanley Bio, Life and Career:
Paul Stanley is an American musician who was born Stanley Bert Eisen on January 20, 1952. He is the co-founder, leader, rhythm guitarist, and co-lead vocalist of the hard rock band Kiss. Stanley also plays the bass guitar. He is either the sole author or a co-author of a good number of the band’s most well-known songs. In order to portray his ego as Kiss, Stanley created the concept of The Starchild. As a member of Kiss, Stanley was honoured with induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in the year 2014.
Before having reconstructive surgery at the age of 30, in 1982, Stanley’s right ear was misshapen as a result of a birth defect known as microtia; as a result, he was unable to hear on that side, he had difficulty determining the direction of a sound, and he was unable to understand speech in an environment with a lot of background noise. Stanley underwent the procedure.
As he was a student at PS 98, other youngsters made fun of him because of his misshapen ear. Stanley had trouble hearing, but that didn’t stop him from appreciating music; he frequently tuned in to watch American Bandstand on television. Little Richard, Eddie Cochran, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Dion and the Belmonts were among his favourite musicians. He also likes the music of Jerry Lee Lewis. At the age of seven, Stanley received a child’s guitar, and prior to that, he had learnt to sing harmony with his family.
In 1960, Stanley’s family uprooted their lives and moved to the Kew Gardens area in Queens. He was a big fan of doo-wop music, but when he saw the Beatles and the Rolling Stones perform on American television, he was intrigued by the performance aspect because he believed that it was within his reach. At the age of 13, Stanley was given his very first genuine guitar, an acoustic instrument despite the fact that he had always wanted an electric one.
He played songs by artists such as Bob Dylan, the Byrds, and the Lovin’ Spoonful in addition to other artists. Stanley received praise for his skill in graphic arts throughout his entire life. As a result, he decided to enrol at the High School of Music and Art in New York City, where he received his diploma in 1970. Before joining Kiss, Stanley played in a local band called Rainbow, and he also participated in the band’s Uncle Joe and Post War Baby Boom.
Stanley became a member of Gene Simmons’ band Wicked Lester in the early 1970s when the two of Simmons’ friends knew one other. In 1972, the band produced an album, however, the album was never distributed commercially in any form. After the dissolution of Wicked Lester, Stanley and Simmons responded to an advertisement placed in Rolling Stone by Peter Criss.
Shortly after enlisting Criss, they began searching for a lead guitarist and held tryouts for the position. Stanley advertised the opening in the Village Voice. Ace Frehley’s playing won over the group, and his style was almost a perfect match for the sound that the group was going for. In February of 1974, Kiss issued their debut album, which was simply titled Kiss.
At this time, Stanley considered altering his name not only for reasons related to marketing but also due to the fact that he had always despised the name that was given to him at birth. He formally changed his name to Paul Stanley after being influenced by musicians Paul McCartney and Paul Rodgers. In Kiss, Stanley’s character is “the Starchild,” which consists of a single star displayed over his right eye. Stanley experimented with a new persona called “the Bandit,” complete with a mask design inspired by the “Lone Ranger” pattern of make-up application.
This make-up design was utilised at a few shows and photo shoots that took place between 1973 and 1974. During some of these photos, he was photographed with both designs simultaneously. “I even tried painting my entire face red,” he admitted to doing at one point. “I looked like a ripe tomato with long hair! Just as a preliminary step, I’d paint a black ring around my eye before deciding on the star… Every one of us chooses to dress in a way that communicates something about ourselves. I have always been fascinated by stars and have felt a strong connection to them. For this reason, when it came time to put anything on my face, I had no doubt that it would be a star.”
