Pete Carroll Bio, Life and Career:

Peter Carroll is an American football coach birth September 15, 1951. He is now the head coach and executive vice president of the Seattle Seahawks football team, which competes in the National Football League (NFL). In his former role as head football coach at USC, from 2001 through 2009, he was responsible for the Trojans’ victories in six bowl games and two consecutive National Championships (2003 and 2004).

Carroll began his head coaching career professionally with the New York Jets in 1994 and then with the New England Patriots from 1997 to 1999. During this time, he was only moderately successful with both teams. When he switched to college football with USC, he turned a failing team into one rated among the nation’s best. Carroll’s success at the college level led to an NFL comeback in 2010 when Seattle hired him to serve as the team’s head coach.

Under Carroll’s leadership, the Seahawks have earned a spot in the postseason nine times, have won their division five times, have been in the Super Bowl twice in a row, and have taken home the franchise’s first title after winning Super Bowl XLVIII. During his stay with the organization, the Legion of Boom defense led the league in scoring for four straight seasons while he was in charge of it. Carroll is one of just four head coaches in American football history to have won the college football national title and the NFL championship.

Carroll went on to attend the local College of Marin for his first two years of junior college, where he was a football team member and earned a letter in his second year of competition. He then transferred to the University of the Pacific, where he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and played football for four years. Carroll earned All-Pacific Coast Athletic Conference honors in both years (1971–1972) when he played free safety for the Tigers at Pacific. In 1973, he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. Carroll played free safety at Pacific for two years.

Following graduation, Carroll attended the training camp held by the Honolulu Hawaiians of the World Football League in Riverside, California. Despite his best efforts, he was not selected for the squad due to shoulder difficulties and diminutive stature. Chester Caddas, Carroll’s head coach, reacted favorably to Carroll because of his upbeat and optimistic nature. After learning that Carroll was interested in coaching, Caddas approached him with the offer of a position as a graduate assistant on his coaching staff at Pacific. Carroll consented and enrolled as a graduate student, eventually gaining a secondary teaching license and a Master’s in physical education in 1976.

During this time, Carroll also worked with the wide receivers and secondary defenders while serving as a graduate assistant for three years. During this period, several other future great coaches served as assistants for Pacific University. These assistants were Greg Robinson, Jim Colletto, Walt Harris, Ted Leland, and Bob Cope. In 1995, Carroll was recognized for his achievements in athletics and inducted into the Pacific Athletic Hall of Fame. After graduating from Pacific, the University of Arkansas hired Carroll’s friend and former teammate, Bob Cope. Cope ultimately persuaded Lou Holtz, the head coach of the Arkansas Razorbacks, to employ Carroll. Carroll was a graduate assistant for Cope’s defense during the 1977 season.

He mainly worked with the secondary. During his time as an offensive lineman with the Arkansas Razorbacks, he crossed paths with future offensive line coach Pat Ruel, a graduate assistant at the time, and future head coach Houston Nutt, a backup quarterback at the time. Carroll would look up to Monte Kiffin, who served as the defensive coordinator for the Arkansas Razorbacks at the time. The Arkansas Razorbacks were victorious in the 1978 Orange Bowl during that season.

After that season, Carroll moved to Iowa State University, where he continued his coaching career as an assistant, working in the secondary under the direction of Earle Bruce. When Bruce went to Ohio State University, he repeatedly hired Carroll as the secondary coach. The Ohio State team competed in the 1980 Rose Bowl, but the USC Trojans defeated them.
In 1980, when Monte Kiffin was hired as the head coach of the North Carolina State University football team, Carroll was hired to serve as the team’s defensive coordinator and secondary coach.

When Bob Cope took over as head coach at Pacific in 1983, he immediately hired Carroll to operate in dual capacities as assistant head coach and offensive coordinator. After spending only one year at Pacific, Carroll decided to pursue a career in coaching in the National Football League (NFL). In 1984, he became the defensive backs coach for the Buffalo Bills. The following year, he took a job with the Minnesota Vikings, working in a capacity similar to his previous one for five seasons (1985–1989). He submitted his application to Stanford University in 1989 for the head coach role, but Dennis Green was ultimately selected.

His performance with the Vikings led to his employment by the New York Jets, where he worked as defensive coordinator for four seasons (1990–1993) under the direction of Bruce Coslet. His tenure with the Jets lasted from 1990 to 1993. At that point, Carroll and Coslet had known each other for a while because Carroll’s elder brother had been Coslet’s roommate throughout college. When there was a vacancy for the head coach post of the Vikings in 1992, he was a significant contender but ultimately lost out to Green for a second time.
