Peter Adamson Bio, Life and Career:

Peter Scott Adamson is a prominent American philosopher and intellectual historian. He was born on August 10, 1972 in the United States. He is a professor of philosophy in late antiquity and in the Islamic world at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, in addition to being a professor of ancient and medieval philosophy at King’s College London.

Both of these jobs are in the academic field. History of Philosophy, the podcast that Adamson hosts on a monthly basis and has never skipped a week, has surpassed 25 million downloads in 2019. It makes an effort to make accessible the history of philosophies all over the world and in all civilizations.

Greek philosophy, Islamic philosophy, and European philosophy up to the early modern era have all been covered, and the publication has also begun series on Indian philosophy (with co-author Jonardon Ganeri), Africana philosophy (with co-author Chike Jeffers), and Chinese philosophy (planned, with co-author Karyn Lai).

In addition to the various scholarly papers Adamson has written, he has transformed the podcast into a book series with the same name. In 2003, he was awarded the Philip Leverhulme Prize, which is given to “excellent research achievements by young academics of distinction and potential based in UK universities.” He was also awarded a grant in the same category in the year 2010.

In the year 2020, the Bavarian Academy of Sciences bestowed upon him the Schelling Prize in recognition of his work on the topic of diversity in historical context. Don’t Think for Yourself is the title of his most recent book. The Role of Authority and Faith in Medieval Philosophical Systems (2022). Adamson earned his bachelor’s degree from Williams College in 1994, graduating with the highest honors possible, and his doctoral degree from the University of Notre Dame in 2000.

Since the year 2000, he has been employed by King’s College London, where he was promoted to the position of professor of ancient and medieval philosophy in 2009. In the year 2012, he was granted a position at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich that allowed him to teach both late antique philosophy and Arabic philosophy concurrently.

Adamson and his children all make their home in Munich, where he is joined by his Bavarian-born wife. His native languages are English and German, and he is also able to read and understand texts written in Ancient Greek, Arabic, Latin, French, Spanish, Italian, and most recently, Persian. He believes that religious thought is “philosophically intriguing and fruitful,” and he pushes for the valuing of religion as an integral component of philosophy.

Adamson stated the following in an interview that took place in 2019: “If I could live ten times, I would prefer to spend nine of those lifetimes concentrating in different aspects of the history of philosophy.” Adamson has been the host of the podcast History of Philosophy Without Any Gaps since it was first broadcast in 2010 and will continue to do so until 2022. This podcast takes a look at some of history’s most influential thinkers and philosophical schools. It had more than four million downloads and thousands of followers by the year 2014.

The podcast ultimately resulted in the writing of several books that were adapted from it. The first volume, which was released in 2014 and titled Classical Philosophy: A History of Philosophy Without Any Gaps, was initially intended for academic audiences. The second volume, which was released in 2015 and titled Philosophy in the Hellenistic and Roman Worlds: A History of Philosophy Without Any Gaps, covers the time period beginning after Aristotle and ending with the death of St. Augustine.

In the third and last part of this series, entitled Philosophy in the Islamic World: A History of Philosophy Without Any Gaps, the topic of philosophical traditions in the Islamic world was discussed. These traditions included Jewish, Christian, and Muslim philosophers. According to Adamson, the intention of the series was to present the history of philosophy in a manner that was “entertaining but not unduly simplistic.”

Daniel J. Levy, a contributor to The Times of Israel, referred to the podcast as “popular,” “pleasant,” and “simple to listen to.” Levy also wrote a review for the third book, which was titled Philosophy in the Islamic World, and he lauded it for the way it presented its material and the breadth of its coverage. In his review of Philosophy in the Hellenistic and Roman Worlds for The Washington Free Beacon, Bruce Fleming praised the book for its use of “groan-inducing puns” and “cute allusions to our day” in addition to praising it for being “full of clear summaries” of the subjects it discusses.

Fleming also praised the book for its “clear summaries” of those subjects. In his review of Classical Philosophy for Prospect, Malcolm Thorndike Nicholson called the puns “a problem.” He also criticized the book in general for having “painful prose” and chapters that are “less comprehensive and less interesting” than the corresponding articles on Wikipedia. Nicholson’s criticisms can be found in the full article here.
