Preet Bharara Bio, Life, and Career:
Preetinder Singh Bharara is an Indian-born American lawyer, author, podcaster, and former federal prosecutor. He served as the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York from 2009 to 2017, and his birth date is October 13, 1968. At the present time, he works as a partner in the legal firm of Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr. Before being promoted to head of the Southern District, he spent the previous five years working as an Assistant United States Attorney. During his tenure, Bharara was reportedly one of the “nation’s most aggressive and outspoken prosecutors of public corruption and Wall Street criminality,” as stated by The New York Times. Although he was born in Firozpur, India, he and his family moved to New Jersey in the year 1970.
Bharara received his bachelor’s degree from Harvard College in 1990 and then went on to earn his law degree from Columbia University before beginning his career as a litigation associate at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher in 1993. After another three years, he made the shift to Sheriff, Friedman, Hoffman & Goodman, a law firm that specializes in white-collar defense cases. Bharara made his debut in the public sector when he was hired by Senator Chuck Schumer to lead the investigation into the removal of U.S. attorneys by the previous presidential administration in 2006.
In 2004, he began his career as a federal prosecutor after making the move to the United States Department of Justice in the capacity of an assistant United States Attorney. His agency was responsible for the vigorous prosecution against the Italian mafia, which resulted in the conviction of four of the Five Families on charges including narcotics trafficking, racketeering, and conspiracy to commit murder. Bharara was in charge of a number of anti-terror investigations as well, including those involving Al-Qaeda.
His office resolved a number of cases by employing a wide variety of unorthodox strategies, such as wiretapping and the seizure of assets. Using these strategies, he successfully prosecuted close to one hundred Wall Street executives on charges of insider trading and securities fraud. Bharara was successful in reaching settlements worth several millions of dollars with the four largest banks in the country and, most significantly, in closing down a number of prominent hedge funds. He was well-known for his bureaucratic approach to the prosecution of criminal cases, and he was responsible for the routine conviction of politicians from both parties for public corruption breaches.
Bharara was permanently barred from entering Russia as a result of an investigation into money laundering that was conducted in Russia in 2013. This was because Bharara would occasionally pursue criminals outside of the United States’ borders. Additionally, he damaged diplomatic relations between India and the United States by prosecuting important members of the Indian and Indian-American communities. These prominent individuals included high-profile diplomats, chief executives, industrialists, and hedge fund managers. After refusing to submit his resignation as part of the 2017 removal of U.S. attorneys in response to the election of Donald Trump as President of the United States, Preet Bharara was fired from his position.
[4] After quitting his position in the government, he entered the academic world and is now on the faculty of the criminal justice department at New York University School of Law. In 2019, he published the first edition of his book, which was titled Doing Justice: A Prosecutor’s Thoughts on Crime, Punishment, and the Rule of Law. In addition to that, he started a number of podcasts, some of which are Stay Tuned with Preet and Doing Justice. Bharara was born in Firozpur, Punjab, India, in 1968 to a Sikh father and a Hindu mother.
His parents were immigrants from Pakistan. Bharara became a citizen of the United States when he was 12 years old. His parents relocated to the United States in 1970. He spent his childhood in Eatontown, a town located in the suburbs of Monmouth County in New Jersey. He went to the Ranney School in Tinton Falls, New Jersey, where he was the top student and graduated at the top of his class in 1986.
